If you freeze liquids in Mason jars...

Did I leave enough room in these?

And the liquid is hot right now. Should I refrigerate first until cool? https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...9f3b2fd999.jpg

It looks like the right amount of room to me. I would let them sit at room temp for an hour if they're very hot, then refrigerate until cold.

looks good to me. And yes, I keep things out until they come down to about room temp, then put in fridge, then freezer. But that's only because I don't want to stick something hot in my freezer and warm that whole area up! (or make my freezer work extra hard).

It's the amount of head room below the curve. Freezer safe mason jars are perfectly straight, no curve. What you have looks a little risky to me. I'd leave an inch below that top curve.

I've had jars break in the freezer just like these with broth in them. I'm guessing I didn't leave enough room below the curve.

Thanks. I used two jars today and I have 2 left. So I'll adjust before freezing them.

I don't have good luck with freezing those types of jars. They aren't meant to be frozen, and I've broken too many. (Experimented with space, cooling down, slow thaw, etc.)

I now will only freeze in freezer-safe jars, which are straight-walled.

Yes. They say "freezer safe" on the box, and the jars have straight sides.

Thanks I had only see there plastic freezer jars. Not that I have the freezer space to freeze anything right normal but maybe eventually I will again.

I highly recommend buying freezer safe canning jars. You will save money in the long run, not to mention the mess of broken glass in your freezer. If you don't freeze food that often, the freezer safe jars make great drinking glasses.

I ended up using it all before having to freeze anything! I will keep in mind that these particular jars are not freezer safe. Thanks all!
