GERD friendly vegetarian recipes?

I have GERD (like acid reflux, maybe another name for it?) and it's been pretty bad lately. :blush Let's just say I have interesting conversations with others, constantly saying excuse me for my constant burps or sometimes trucker-like belches! It's getting so bad I'm bloated all the time and my back hurts from the gas. :blush :blush :blush :blush

I'm allergic to meat and dairy. I'm addicted to potatoes and Italian like food. (pasta!) But I know I need to change. Potatoes are safe, right? As long as it's not french fries...

Any recipes/cookbooks out there for people with GERD? :shrug

thankyouthankyouthankyou ahead of time!

I don't know much about it. You want to tell me more. You can't eat meat or dairy. But, what other things trigger it.

Maybe we can come up with some recipes for you. I've never seen a GERD Veg cookbook and I am a cookbook junkie :mrgreen I use vegweb.com a lot. You can pick a food you can eat and then it will pull up recipes with that one thing. Like potatoes or apples.

Fried foods, tomatoes, anything acidy like oranges, grapefruits, beans. I'm not sure if tofu counts or not. :shrug Coffee triggers it and I'm addicted to that. Hot beverages do so I gotta be careful. Though some herb teas I've done okay with. Chocolate could also trigger the symptoms. :rolleyes

I've used parsley in the past to help and its worked. I'll be getting some of that today for a recipe. I think I should get extra. :idea

How about raw foods? Do you do better with cooked veggies?

I did a little research and some people seemed to improve when eating raw foods. If you like hummus I know there are recipes using zuchinni instead of beans.

Are all beans out? I know some people have a hard time or are allergic to some beans and fine with others :shrug

From what I read fat is bad...is that right? If you try tofu they make lowfat tofu. Tempeh on the other hand is a strange little soy product that should be digested better. I make fake blt's with it.

Have you tried carob....a woman must have her chocolate :giggle

You could juice parsley or add it to smoothies. Techino...I think that is it...Here it is...http://www.teeccino.com/ is a wonderful yet expensive coffee sub. It contains chicory which is really good for digestion. Not sure if it could help GERD. But, I actually found if I used a drip pot that I didn't need a lot. The great thing is that you can make just one cup and it still works. I cannot get a drip coffee pot to work unless I make a whole pot. But, the teeccino isn't like that. You can start by mixing it in with your coffee more and more until it isn't coffee anymore. You can use it in a press, too. It might take a bit to get used to it, but it sounds like you need something.

Thanks, Heather! And yeah I do love carob. It doesn't taste the same as chocolate but still it's healthier. I'll check out that site you mentioned.

I can't get away from coffee. I think I'll need to just eat more fresh parsley. It's good for you anyway and it's not too expensive. I may start growing my own. :mrgreen :) :) :)

I would recommend looking to the Dr. McDougall Program. He has a book out that has to do with gastro-intestinal health.

DH has chronic GERD that causes him a lot of problems. Since I switched over to this way of eating, his health has been much better and the only time he has GERD problems is when he eats something too oily. He eats a WIDE range of foods, too.

Here's a link to the book I"m talking about http://www.drmcdougall.com/store_dt.html . I would recommend getting the book The McDougall Program ( http://www.drmcdougall.com/store_mp.html ) by Dr. McDougall as well, it's a good starting point.

GERD friendly vegetarian recipes?

Are you doing all the 'tricks' to help, like taking 5-6 papaya enzyme tablets with your meal and not ever 'washing down' bites of food with a drink, and not drinking sodas?
