Do you let your kids snack after supper?

My children are 7 and 9. The 9 year old, my son, seems to have a small stomach and needs to eat a couple hours after dinner and into the evening, esp. since he does not go to bed early but has always been a late nighter. For some reason , my husband is into rules about not eating after supper and it is really getting to be a problem for ds . (and me consequently because I don't like seeing ds upset). I would really like to know what other GCMers allow as far as evening snacking. I really believe my son NEEDS to snack at that time. Honestly, physically, NEEDS it. Does anyone else have a child they feel this way about?

My children get a small snack every night before bed. :shrug

Is it an issue of what he wants to snack on? Can he have healthy choices ie: veggies or fruits or cheese?

No, dinner is the last time to eat for the night. They get an afternoon snack though. We eat dinner late, between six and seven but eating at seven thirty is not unheard of.

If they are hungry, my kids eat a bedtime snack.

I believe many children absolutely do need it. :yes

If there is more Than an hour bw dinner and bed time then a snack may be in order.

we sometimes (once a week) give the children something before bed, a bowl plain yogurt with honey and blueberries, for example.
i don't mind because i think it helps them sleep better.
if it were a constant (every night) i think i would re-evaluate dinner and if they are getting enough the rest of the day.

the goal is no food after dinner but at our house the secedule runs dinner - teeth - story - bed. So there is not much time. But when on occasion Early Bird says she is hungry in the middle of bed time routine I offer her food (healthy food that she liks- but not her favorite) and let her eat it.

We eat between 5 and 6 and DS starts getting ready for bed immediately afterwards, so this is completely theoretical on my part, but if we had an older child who was getting ready for bed later, I would definately let them have a (healthy, not junk) snack before bed, assuming they had eaten a decent amount at their evening meal and weren't just holding out for something more fun :yes

We always have a bedtime snack. Our bedtime is a little later though, like 9ish.

We don't typically, but generally they get up from the table, brush their teeth, go potty, and get in bed. :shrug

On the nights where we go somewhere after supper, like AWANA on Wednesday nights, they get half a banana or half a sandwich with pb or cheese. Something little, but fairly filling that they have as a snack.

So I suppose that if it were a regular thing to not go to bed directly after supper then we'd probably do a snack before bed.

Our kids snack before bed every night. We eat dinner early then head outside for an hour or two, so by bedtime, they're hungry again.

Yes. We eat dinner around 5:00, and bedtime isn't until 8-8:30.

Like others are saying, we didn't when they went straight from dinner to bed, but they have a later bedtime this summer and so they do have a snack some nights if they want one. We would just avoid falling into a routine of junky snacks every night.

Re: Do you let your kids snack after supper?

My kids eat what seems to everyone like all the time, so I like having dinner be the end of it for the day and give me & the kitchen a break. At dinner time I often remind certain kids before they leave the table that this is their last chance for food before bed, so make sure they are full before leaving the table. But I also make sure to have them brush their teeth for bed no more than 1-2 hrs after they finish eating (even if they wont be asleep for another hour) so they have that feeling of finality in their mouth. :lol There is almost never an ask for food once teeth are brushed from any of them.
So usually on the rare occasion somebody asks for more, it's needed. :yes

We do. Dinner is usually around 5:30 and bedtime is 7:30. So they get something like PB toast or cheese when we start bedtime routines. For times when we have a late dinner, we don't usually do bedtime snacks unless they are especially hungry (for whatever reason).
