It works, it really works! Redirecting works!!

I had posted a thread the other day about spanking my 3-year old and hating, hating, hating it but not remembering what to do as an alternative and not wanting to be permissive.

The responses I received were so wonderful and supportive. One response really got me though: when my child is hitting, throwing, bla bla bla, instead of spanking, redirect him to something else.

Well let me tell you, the last couple of days have been nothing short of a miracle! When my son started acting up on a couple of occasions, instead of losing my cool and spanking, or just plain losing my cool, I grabbed him and planted raspberries all over his tummy and back. He erupted in giggles and instead of me being stressed out for the next hour, I laughed too and it was wonderful! After that, the undesirable behavior stopped. No more issues.

Just by being goofy instead of being a tyrant, hours of frustration and tears were avoided.

WOW!

You might enjoy the book Playful Parenting- it has a lot of great info about using play to parent more effectively. I know that is one the things I am really not good at but when I remember to it makes a huge difference.
