Teaching French

I have been tinkering with the idea of teaching high school French. A couple of friends have said they are interested. :jawdrop :woohoo :nails I'm wondering what would be reasonable to charge? I'm thinking 60-90 minutes once a week. Thoughts?

Our local one day a week classes charge about $50 per month. However this is a highly organized endeavor with substitutes of the teacher is sick and a real classroom, homework etc.

If I were doing it in my home, I would charge less just because I'd want to adjust the schedule if needed and it wouldn't be quite as official. Like local colleges have heard of our one day school so they are familiar with it but they wouldn't be familiar with a home teacher.

That said, we paid a mom around $20 per semester, mostly for materials, to teach literature. And $60 per semester to teacher integrated physics and chemistry. She was motivated to keep costs low because she wanted students to take the class with her son. She would be teaching him anyway.

I think a happy medium between those 2 would be good.

I'd ask the other moms what they were willing to pay or else just observe what they may be paying elsewhere for classes.

I'm thinking $100-$125 per semester? But it might really depend on COL in your area.

Re: Teaching French

I'm not sure what I would charge.

But having taught Spanish twice a month at co-op, and having tutored lots of subjects weekly, I would probably lay down the law about high school foreign language being a matter of you get what you put into it. To actually accomplish the amount of language typically covered in a high school credit, students need to work on it DAILY, 4-6 times a week. As a once or twice a week tutor, I would view my role as clarifying the grammatical concepts taught in a week's worth of material, perhaps providing a bit of communication such as conversation or games, MAYBE helping with grading but that would cost extra since it would eat into our time. But basically, no matter how great 1-on-1 or small group instruction may be, an hour a week just isn't enough to cover a week of material with enough practice to stick. Doing the homework in a lump the day before isn't enough to stick either. DAILY working on it at home or else your kid will get lost or we will cover very little. I can be the fluent person supervising the quality of work, but the parent has to be the manager making sure their student is putting in the effort outside of class, or else it won't be a credit, it will just be enrichment.
