iPhone--New ? Post 8.

My mom is inheriting my brother's iPhone5. He moved to a cheaper plan and gave it to her. ;)

My mom has *no* smartphone experience. She's had my iPod touch for over a year and still hasn't figured out using it. Well, she just *doesn't* use it. She's intimidated by *all* the features and doesn't just stop and learn one or two. ;)

If you'd just been gifted a smartphone, but knew nothing of how to use it, what apps would you feel are a necessity and you'd grow to love and use? Apps need to mostly be free for now.

She has a few games that she likes, but she tends to pick the ones that need internet, so she's never able to play them when she's bored somewhere. :doh I'll get her set with things like Temple Run and Bejeweled. I told her she can use it for shopping lists and she kind of likes that idea.

This is hard for me because I have a fully stocked, complex phone. :giggle I have *everything* on my iPhone. Hers is identical to mine in every way, except for color (my brother picked white, I have black). I'm going to have to really work to convince her that she should get an Otterbox case... (It's a lot of money, but, really, cheaper than replacing the phone.)

Re: iPhone

Using the camera? I use that all the time because I always have my phone with me.

Maybe the kindle or nook app for reading? Or does her bank of an app? That might be useful.

I'll have to walk her through how to use the camera, but I think she'll use it a lot, once she catches on. :tu

Kindle is a good one. She was using Kindle on her computer for a short while. :)

Does she do social media at all?

Definitely camera. :yes excellent for a granda. I'd also set her up for imessaging so she can text you for free. ;)

Lessee... Does she have a Netflix account? If so, I'd get that app. Kindle for iPhone.

Other than that, I'd just help her get familiar with the apps that come with the phone. Bearing in mind she might have to relearn some things when ios7 comes out. :shifty

I just got my first iPhone in April! It was so fun to learn how to use :yes

I love, love, LOVE the Waze app for directions and avoiding traffic and speed traps :shifty

MyFitnessPal and Nike Running, too, if she's into fitness. Oh, and the Seconds free interval timer :rockon

She does Facebook. She doesn't post much and the phone won't do Farmville, so I'm not sure how much she'll use it on there. She may get hooked after a while. She's terrified of using data, though, and really only plans to play on the phone while she's out.

iMessage will be set up as soon as she gets it moved to her iTunes account. It's *the* texting app on the phone now, which makes it easier. It switches automatically between iMessage and regular texts.

She doesn't have Netflix and probably wouldn't like it on the small screen. :shrug3 Our internet isn't great, so it's never been practical to pay for any streaming sites.

I mentioned tonight that there's a new iOS coming out and she was *not* making the connection that her phone would change entirely with it. When she finally, somewhat got it, the response was "do I have to? I thought that was for new phones..."

I should look at Waze for me. I somehow missed that. :doh

So, my mom used my phone tonight. She's terrified of the keyboard. And having to dial on a touch screen. It's not that she can't. It's just that she's never done it before. She really doesn't do much on her phone, just calls and texts to my brother and I. I told her she could stick with learning those first, but she said it's silly to pay for the smartphone (costs a bit more than a dumb phone) and not actually use it. She's also really concerned she'll use up tons of data without realizing it. I'll show her how to turn it off right away to make her feel better on that one. ;) I turn it off to play certain games that work offline, but will use data if they can.

Re: iPhone

So, she has the phone. I changed the contact info so this number is under her name and my brother's only has his new number. But it's still showing up as my brother when she texts me. Any idea why?

Re: iPhone

You get warning texts when you start using up your data. At 65% and 90% I think. I'm not sure if that's something that happens automatically or if you have to sign up for that b

Re: iPhone

We get the warning texts. She still worries. :P~ Basically, she has no understanding of *what* uses data, so she could use it and not realize it. So, getting the text wouldn't tell her how she hit the limit. In all the months I've had the phone, I've used less than half a gig each month, so I'm really not concerned about her using too much.

Figured out how to fix the contacts. :)
