lego storage

Ds got some more lego jr sets for Christmas, which means the previous small-ish lego box that we had for storing things isn't cutting it anymore. I know many of you have many more legos than we do. What do you use? We're fine with storage for the loose pieces, but he has quite a few pieces that he has built (vehicles, buildings, etc) from these sets that he'd like to keep together. What do you use?

Mine like to display their built sets on the top of dresser. We also have totes with tops that the kids store pieces and some built one lego pieces in. The totes are then stacked on top of each other on a shelf. We also have one larger tote that rolls that goes under a bed.

Ds has large flat rubbermaid containers for the bigger piece, a medium size three drawer rubbermaid for medium sized pieces, and a small three drawer rubbermaid for the smaller pieces including the lego minifigures. He displays the built legos on shelves in his bedroom.

One of those large under the bed containers is a great idea. Unfortunately ds' bed is on the floor, not up on a frame, but maybe we need to change that. Otherwise I wonder if it would fit under the couch, since he plays with it in the family room rather than his bedroom. Hmmm....

We have the top of a short bookshelf for displaying any 3D projects, but not just Lego.

Also I remember your old Lego thread. Do you want to share which sets you ended up getting him?

Re: lego storage

I think I asked this before his birthday this summer, and now I can't remember what we got for his birthday. But for Christmas he got:
Batman & Superman vs Lex Luthor
Spider-man Hideout
Mountain Police Chase

He is really into superheros! The spiderman hangout was pretty funny when he opened it. I had told my mom he'd like it, just looking at it online and not studying the actual pieces that well. Well, there are two pumpkin pieces that definitely look like jack o lanterns. (I think the bad guy shoots them? I don't even know.) They are pretty obvious on the picture. Ds opened the gift and immediately said, "Halloween?! No thank you! Grandma, do you celebrate Halloween?!" It all just came spilling out of his mouth so fast with this total look of shock and horror. It was honestly pretty funny. We reassured him that we could take those pieces out or change the box for a different set. Well, he's changed his tune and plays with the pumpkin pieces too. But I sure felt badly for suggesting it and creating such an unexpected scene about Halloween!

I found an under the bed sweater box in the basement, though unfortunately it's too tall to fit under any of our living room furniture. For now it's on the shelf under the coffee table. The tops of our bookshelves are all already covered with other stuff. The current frustration is that dh keeps helping ds put the sets together and then ds destroys them. Ah, life with a 4 year old!

Thanks for the ideas!

This is only indirectly related to legos, but has anyone done the Montessori style shelving (low cubbies) and can you advise where to get some? Thanks

I do that. I like the simple wooden cube shelving from Joann's or other craft stores (turn unit on its side). Or you can get Ikea Kallax shelves or even the cube shelving from Target (both of those two options are particle board, so I don't prefer them, but I do have some of the Ikea Kallax ones). You can also just use a large bookshelf you have and anchor it to the wall, keeping the lower shelves open for toys and using the upper shelves for whatever you want.

Incidentally, Hobby Lobby has some super cute rope baskets in a variety of colors in two different sizes that seem very Montessori (or Waldorf) to me. Trays you can get at Ikea or Montessori Services.
