Anyone have a Pug?

We are thinking of getting a pug pup in September /Oct, partly because autumn has bee desperate for one for years and I think Monty (our pug/cocker cross) would LOVE the company.

Does anyone have pugs? And if so could you give me an idea of what I'm letting myself in for :giggle

I suspect they'd be similar to how Monty was as a pup, but I really don't know.

I've never lived with one, but I have a friend with a pair of Pugs (she had her first dog for several years before deciding to get another one - she loves them :heart) and they're really just people-loving little clowns :giggle They can be a little difficult to potty train - which is something I think a lot of small dogs struggle with - but they're sooo people-oriented that positive reinforcement training really motivates them :yes

Obviously, you need to be okay with hearing your dog loudly breathing 24/7 :shifty

Yes. We have Inga. She was an obnoxious puppy and a little difficult to potty train. She is very food driven. So, we have been able to teach her some things that way. She is also very protective and runs off easily. But, I've known other pugs who are more obedient:lol She thinks she's much bigger than she is and has no problem playing with our Border Collie/Aussie cross and other dogs when they come over. Inga is only 11 pounds though. She has a difficult time on walks. But, she has excellent short spurts of energy. She would gladly sleep 23 hours a day. She makes the funniest nest to sleep in and insists on being with me constantly.

So far, she's been very healthy. She has an eye condition that is the opposite of being cross eyed, that is hilarious.

She farts quite a bit even though she's on a diet that agrees with her. I don't think she can help it. We love her to bits! I don't want to be a cat lady when I'm old. I want a grumble of pugs!

They can have quite a few health issues including hip problems, eye problems, breathing problems especially their nostrils, and much more. Which really concerned me. I think some people are definitley cross breeding pugs with other breeds, as well. So, I think I might really look at who is breeding and see the litter and parents if possible. I saw all kinds of people posting what was obviously not full pugs when we were looking. Which I guess is fine. But, I admit I don't usually buy a dog, we usually rescue. But, I didn't want to buy an expensive pug cross because someone was experimenting or over breeding animals.

You can see some pics of her on my instagram if you are on there. It's a_long_yarn

Oh thanks so much for all that info ladies.

We have certified breeders over here that are what's called "KC Registered" (Kennel Club Registered) and you get certified papers of the pugs bloodlines and the pups are inspected and tested etc, most of the parents are tested for hereditary illnesses and the lineage is proven and certified often times with Crufts champions on both sides.

Wed be getting a pup from a registered breeder. I know it's more expensive but given the problems pugs can have I'd rather know where they came from iykwim?

What are they like as pups? Is there anything I should be aware of?

Monty was a great pup,I totally expected him to chew everything but he didn't. Our chocolate lab that we had 13 years ago hover chewed through our walls and table legs!
