I was in line at Panera. I overheard the lady behind me comment on being a vegan. Then I heard her say she was contemplating a veggie sandwich or the broccoli cheddar soup.
I turned around and told her gently that the broccoli cheddar soup had a chicken stock base to it.
She got mad. Said it was one of her favorite soups and now I've ruined it for her.

I think she was mad to learn it had chicken stock in it...not mad at me necessarily...but it felt like a "kill the messenger" moment.

So..
Would you want to know ?
Should I keep my fat mouth shut next time ?

As a vegan, I'd want to know. She sounds very confused. Poor lady. (maybe she thought the cheddar was soy cheese :giggle)Don't worry about it, you did the right thing.

I've met some people who self-identify as vegan/vegetarian who really don't get it. Vegan drinking a Latte with cow milk - but it was skim! A vegetarian who ate chicken noodle soup - but it didn't have chunks of chicken.

What U did was perfectly fine. Anybody who actually IS vegan (which I doubt this woman was, since she is eating CHEESE soup in the first place) would want to know if they were consuming animal products, since there is a reason they choose not to. U didnt ruin anything for her. She is confused.

Yes--I would absolutely want to know! :yes and for me it's a health issue. I'm allergic to chicken :( When I realized that it is in everything at the Chinese place at the mall, including the veggie dishes :doh it explained SO MUCH! :sigh

I've also been served salmon for me "vegan meal" at black tie affairs :doh Most people don't get it. ;)
