Picture books set in particular states?
I think I'm going to do the 50 States for 1st grade social studies. That way, it sort of goes along with what my oldest is doing for American History, but a lot lighter than trying to cover the Civil War with a 6yo, kwim?
I'd like to use a lot of picture books to go along with this. Can we make a list of favorite picture books that have an identifiable setting within a particular state? Or a particular feature that reminds you of a particular state? For example, maybe Blueberries For Sal reminds me of Maine blueberries. I'll list the states later, and edit everyone's ideas into the OP, and whatever else I come up with. :heart General Helpful Websites with book ideas for this-- http://wrappedinfoil.com/Wrapped_in_Foil/Home.html ...some of the books are novels for older children though Arizona-- website with a whole list Maine-- Blueberries for Sal For Missouri: http://www.amazon.com/Show-Me-Missou...5012184&sr=1-3 Texas-- http://www.amazon.com/This-Is-Texas-...5011956&sr=1-1 http://www.amazon.com/Is-Lone-Star-A...5012010&sr=1-2 Virginia-- When I was Young in the Mountains West Virginia-- When I was Young in the Mountains |

Make Way for Ducklings for Massachusetts.

Re: Picture books set in particular states?
"Mudgy and Millie" for Idaho. It's like "Make Way for the Ducklings" in that it takes place in just one city (Coeur d'Alene), and if kids visit there, they will recognize all the landmarks. In fact, if you go there, there are statues of a moose (Mudgy) with a mouse (Millie) hiding in his ear at all the major locations within the story. Very fun!

Re: Picture books set in particular states?
I grew up in Alaska, and there are tons that are specific for there, but we love "Ol' 556" by Shannon Cartwright. About the Alaska Railroad, has tons of historical sites and native animals the trains go by. Anything by that author/illustrator is probably spectacular.
