He is the best dog ever.
We adopted him Sunday. He is the first dog I ever really picked. My first dog I picked from three littermates and I didn't get a choice to the breed (my only purebred dog). She was a gift and I appreciated her, but she was never really the kind of dog I would have picked on my own.
My second dog dh picked for his parents. We both liked him a lot, which was good when his parents gave him back to us. But really dh did most of the picking. We hadn't been looking for a dog, but dh was drawn to this one at a home and garden show and we drove an hour the next day to adopt him.
My third dog was one I would have never picked b/c she is part Chow and I hate chows. But we let our second dog help pick and he really liked her and she liked him. They were companions for 12 years.
I've always loved bigger dogs than the three I've owned. And I've always loved brindles. I saw this dog on the shelter website and he was one of the ones I liked a lot. When we walked through the shelter (which, tbh, is so heartbreaking. I wanted to take a bunch home with me) I liked him immediately. When we met him he came up to me immediately and wasn't phased one bit by the family chaos. We saw 2 other dogs and one was obviously a bad fit for us (our noise was making him nervous and we were being calm) and the other one just seemed disinterested, but might have been okay with us. She was definitely a good dog, just not the right one.
So he's 6ish months old, a staffi-lab mix (I honestly don't see much lab in him, but that is what the shelter had on his documents).
One accident in the house, that's it. We take him out a lot. But tonight he went to the back door on his own, we took him out and he did all his business. I wish A was as easy to house train. :shifty ;)
He loves to sleep up next to me or E, all stretched out against us. Today he was doing that and A was on my lap, bounced into him. He jumped up b/c she woke him. He looked at her, kind of grunted, and went right back to sleep. No signs of real upset or aggression.
He loves walking with me, loves playing in the back yard, running around with the big kids.
He has tried to chew on a few things he isn't supposed to, but doesn't get upset when we take the item away and redirect him to a toy he can chew.
So far the biggest two problems seem to be that he doesn't like other male dogs (our other dog is a female, but when we have taken walks we have noticed this) and he gets really nervous on our walk when there are traffic noises (our walk goes by a busy street for about half).
I absolutely love him. :heart :heart
