Here's a cheap way to add some variety to fudge brownies. We eat a lot of these because they don't cost much, and I have discovered that even homemade fudge brownies can be boring after a while.

Before making a 9x13 pan of brownies, pulverize about 4 cups plain pretzels. Measure 1 1/2 cups pretzel crumbs. Combine this with a stick of melted butter and 1/4 cup sugar, press into your buttered 9x13 pan, and bake until fairly solid, about 8 minutes at 350. Let cool at least 10 minutes while making the brownies. Pour the batter on top of the crust, spread it out evenly, and bake as usual.

Here's another one:

Make a 9x13 pan of brownies using 1 cup flour and 4 eggs to produce a sturdy brownie. (I may have posted this elsewhere with different proportions, but this worked out the best.) Fold in 1 cup unsweetened fresh or frozen raspberries just before pouring into the pan, then stud the top with 1 more cup raspberries. Bake as usual. YUM.
