What's a good place to buy an area rug from? I just started looking into it and they cost way more money than I ever anticipated:jawdrop

We moved into an apartment and our dining area is carpeted, I have a 2 and a 4 year old, so something must be done. My best solution is an area rug unless there is another alternative I've not thought of:think

It depends on how long you want/need it to last.

I just ordered one and it comes this week I hope. Squeeeeee

Im in the same predicament. my kids are messy eaters. They need a rug that goes at least a foot beyond the chairs when they are pulled out. I didn't find any rugs that were bigger than like five and a half by seven at ikea.

Home Depot had a beautiful one that I bought last year. I had a lot to choose from there and would totally recommend it. It has held up to three rough and tumble boys and it's got a beautiful pattern. I'll try to get a picture after I vacuum tomorrow...

We gave serious consideration to ordering a vinyl mat from Staples or Office Max or such when we had a dining room carpet like that.

http://www.staples.com/Floortex-Polycarbonate-XXL-Chair-Mat-Rectangular-48x118/product_459573#id='dropdown_449399' This one is 5'x10' (well, two inches shy of 10')

We also gave serious thought to buying heavy duty vinyl by the yard, like they sell for making tablecloths.

I think we tried putting down a shower curtain while we mulled it over, but that was a tripping hazard.

Erm, none of our ideas were pretty, but it was cream carpet, and we had a one year old. I figured we could roll up whatever on special occasions, but that day in and day out, something waterproof to protect the cream carpet would have been a good idea functionally even though it may have been ugly. Kids grow up eventually.

For that purpose, an indoor/outdoor carpet might be perfect. Overstock.com has pretty decent prices.

Lowe's, Home Depot, TJ Maxx, online at Pottery Barn or Garnet Hill (if you wanna spend $$), Overstock.com, Pier 1, even Target carries them.

we just bought an area rug on clearance at Target for $50 and it is working well - but our dining room is small (we're currently in an apartment).

pic below the spoiler, in case it helps. room isn't finished yet - needs a plant in the other corner & a picture on the wall. and more chairs or a bench. ;)

Long term pretty solution: Washable area rug.

Mid term practical solution: Plastic chair mats from an office store meant for roller chairs.

Short term quick fix: Beach towels under chairs.

We use a long piece of leftover carpeting under the girls' chairs/side of the table.

That is exactly the visual I need:rockon

I'm dealing with a similar apartment space. I post a picture in a bit. :yes

Because it's a small space with a bay window I'm thinking I might need something round:think ( I don't have a table yet either)

oooh, post a picture if you can! but with what you're describing, I bet a round table could work really well.

that particular table there is pushing it for our family size, it's definitely small. it fits all five of us, but barely. however I measured and I think anything bigger would have dwarfed the space, and we have a bar off to the right side of that picture where we can put serving dishes, etc...so I decided to go with a good quality but smaller table and then when we eventually buy a house, I'll buy a bigger dining room table and use that table in the kitchen. :giggle

wow, even your walls are about the same color as ours!

I think a round table would look good in that space, with a larger round rug under it. And I was looking at Rosanne's link and saw this, it might help?

Rosanne, that rug is fantastic in that space, and your dd is getting so big! (and her pigtails are adorable!)

Pier 1 and World Market carry washable, thinner area rugs that might be perfect for you. (Pier 1 is one sale right now I think.) I'd just be sure it was colorfast first. It can be hard to put an area rug that is thicker on top of nice carpet.

Other than the places already mentioned, I've been drooling over the rugs here: http://www.dashandalbert.com/ This is a good time of year to buy rugs on sale. I'm looking for natural fibers only because of health concerns from some rugs on the market, and I'm really hoping to find one made of cotton (especially chenille) or viscose. I've felt some suuuuper soft to the touch (but sturdy) rugs made of viscose.

And Roseanne, that rug is perfect for your room! :rockon Love the shape!
