Why are my canning jars dusty?

I did my first canning project the other day. It seemed to go fine. I put the jars on the counter and they sealed but the next day there was a fine dust all over the jars. On the tops and the sides. Nothing else on the counter had dust. Just the jars.

I washed and boiled the jars before I filled them and I used a water bath canner. Any ideas?

I think my mom puts a tablespoon of vinegar in the water bath. You can also use a teaspoon of cream of tartar.

That makes sense peridot. We have well water. I feel better now, I was kind of wondering if I ruined something!
