My daughter has a 2 piece dress similar to this, i think we got it at walmart. It is a little more casual then this, but has rows and rows of ruffles. She LOVES it. I was wondering if something like this would be difficult for a beginner sewer?

I was thinking maybe I could make her a Christmas dress.

The sewing world swears ruffles are easy.

theribbonretreat.com has a pettiromper tute that's similar to that, maybe you could do it with a flat bottom?

I make ruffled tote bags till the cows come home, I don't find ruffles hard :shrug I set my stitch length to as long as it goes and crank the thread tension up as high as it goes (for fabric, for lace and satin I do #2 thread tension) and it comes out ruffled/gathered behind it. The key is a LOT of pins when you tack it down. Unless you're me, I use WonderTape.

Ruffles aren't complicated. :no

My mom swears by doing a zig zag stitch over crochet thread. It doesn't break when you gather it nearly as easily. :)

Yes a ruffler. as soon as i had a girl i finally bought one. just make sure to not buy a generic one and look online for tips and tricks. pp have also shared good tips plus you can use your serger to gather if you already have one. another way to gather is with clear elastic known as lastin as well as elastic thread.
