I'm making this (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/cable-blanket) blanket for my nephew due the end of this month. :yes

The pattern calls for size 3 and 6 needles. The yarn (http://www.yarnmarket.com/yarn/Debbie_Bliss_Yarn-Baby_Cashmerino_Yarn-500.html) (by itself) indicates sz 3 needles.

Here's where it gets tricky: I want to use another yarn that calls for sz 8 needles. :scratch

So, do I just follow the pattern using size 5 and 8 needles and it will be a little bigger?

Do I have to adjust in some other way?

:help I need to order the yarn and get knitting. I need to make sure I'm going to do it right. :yes

Okay. So, you don't want to use a DK weight yarn, you want to use a Worsted or Aran weight yarn? It is MUCH thicker.

You would actually need to use size 8 and size 11(ish??) needles to get the same effect, and it will be MUCH bigger.

Umm...could you find a DK weight yarn? Or do you want then end result to be bigger?

I don't want the end result to be bigger :no

This (http://www.kyarns.com/product/plymouth-encore-tweed/plymouth-yarn) yarn was recommended for its softness, washability and ease of use. :yes

I need something similar in DK weight, then, if I'm understanding correctly. :think

:yes Or of course look for patterns that call for a yarn of that weight and do one of them instead.

If you click on yarn ideas at the top of the pattern page on Ravelry, you can see what yarn other people have used.

One of the really popular choices is Knit Picks Swish DK (http://www.knitpicks.com/cfyarns/yarn_display.cfm?ID=5420168&media=RVYL12Q1&utm_medium=WEBADV&utm_campaign=RVYL12Q1&utm_content=Q1%2012%20yarn%20link&utm_source=www.ravelry.com). I've made a scarf and hat out of the Swish sport weight and it is really soft and nice to work with. It is a superwash so it can be tossed in the wash. I've used the Plymouth Encore and I think Swish is much nicer. You do have to order it but it is quite affordable.
