So, I've been doing some reading on oil pulling and I think I am going to give it a try. I've been having a terrible time with my teeth the past few years and I am hoping this might help.

Basically, you gently swish a quality oil in your mouth for up to 20 minutes to detox your mouth (teeth, gums, tongue). I am using coconut oil. You have to do this before you drink anything or put any sort of other substance into your mouth.

I put the oil cold and hard into my mouth and let it melt. It is gross at first, but I am sure I will get used to it. I gently move the oil around in my mouth until the oil is white and milky...or until my children require me to talk with them. :giggle

Today I lasted nearly 10 minutes. It wasn't gross or gagging at all once the oil melted.

The "promise" of oil pulling is stronger, whiter teeth, healthier gums, and possibly some repair to teeth that are sensitive or weakening. I'll document my progress and "results" here. I hope to oil pull 3-4 times a week for 3 months.

I've been oil pulling. I haven't the last few days and I got a sore throat. I'm resuming tomorrow. It's helped my tooth sensitivity so so much!

I did it a few years ago and my teeth got really white. :yes I have a strong oil aversion and I was sure I would gag but I was ok. The hardest part is murphy's law- it is guaranteed your kids will ask you important questions or start fighting the minute you get the oil liquified. :doh

I need to start again, though, my gums aren't doing so great. :-/

Is there a type of oil that's "better" for oil pulling?

Sesame and sunflower are best, but CO is very good also. I cannot find the sunflower and sesame without going to WF in the city, so I have been using CO.

I got sunflower oil at walmart! Sesame oil too....sesame is so expensive though! But I swear it did better than the sunflower which isnt' as strong. My gums felt AMAZING after I did it even the first few times.

Does it have to be cold pressed, organic? Because Walmart by me does sell sunflower oil, but it is not cold pressed or organic.

mine was virgin. I suppose like everything else, organic is BETTER, but I do what I can. It seems to work.

Could you do it at the end of the day after you brush your teeth or does it have to be first thing in the morning?

First thing in the morning is best. I feel limited to no change when I do it other times of the day. So it does require some discipline. Also too much less than 20 minutes does't really do much in terms of pulling infection/toxins either.

:up that

I have a med that I need to take with a full glass of water first thing in the morning, and then not eat for 30-60 minutes.

doing the oil first and then my med would mean a cranky mommy from low blood sugar. :shifty

Interesting.. I'd love to hear how it goes. I might try a different oil though. Coconut oil is gross to me. But since it's all we have, I might try that until payday.

Just read that sesame or sunflower is best. I could go for sunflower...

From what I have read it seems to work best first thing in the morning, but perhaps nighttime is better than no time?

I don't think CO likes me...will have to remember to maybe pick up sunflower oil...though first thing in the morning is a lot-of-talking/calling the kids time of day...:think

Me too. I had to get up earlier before I started the sheep herding portion of my day. Even then, we write a lot of notes if one of them gets up early! and I give up around 15 minutes on those days.

I HAVE done it at night. I am not going to say it doesn't help at ALL. It does't seem to be as effective is all.

would this be a good idea for my dd who has a broken tooth & can't get it pulled for another 5 days? She's 10, if that matters any.

I used Sunflower Oil.

I only did it a few times. Yes, it's gross at first, but as more saliva was added, it was way less gross.

I don't have any teeth problems, so I quit. Kinda' did it because it's supposed to be good

I've tried it too. Didn't realize it helped with sensitivity though! Going to take it up again! I stopped because I don't care too much about whiteness. My teeth aren't that bad. But painful! Took sugar out of diet and that helped quite a bit! Thanks for posting!

Aren't you supposed to rinse wig a little sea salt water after?

mellymommy
02-10-2012, 11:19 AM
I totally forgot about that! Yes, you are supposed to rinse with salt water and then brush. Silly me! I've been doing it wrong this week. Hahaha!

I have never heard of this...good to know, I think I'll try it! I have a really bizzarre thing called geographic tongue where I get random red, sensitive spots on my tongue that migrate. I wonder if this would help at all? :think

I am assuming that this is safe to do while pregnant. Right?

mellymommy

I would think so. It is just oil & salt water.

I tell ya, the salt water swish is gross but made such a difference in the sensitivity dept.
