I am having joint pain in spades right now. The doctor recommended Aleve.

I took the dose he told me to take- 500 mgs.

Itsbeen over an hour, and I have NO relief. None, at all.

I found it to be as good as ibuprofen, but steadier, as in I didn't have to take it as often, for relieving injury-related inflamation pain.

I stopped taking it when more was known about its ulcer risk.

It doesn't work well for me, either. Tylenol or Motrin are my go-to's for pain.

I usually take ibuprofen, 800 mg, for headache or joint pain. I don't often have Aleve around and can't remember the last time I took it to be able to compare it to something else. Tylenol does absolutely nothing for my headaches, however.

If you decide to take something else for pain in the next 10 hours, make sure it's not aspirin or ibuprofen since they act similarly to the Aleve. Tylenol would be ok to take right away.

I was once prescribed Aleve (so, higher dose) and it was like swallowing M&M's for all the good it did me.

Pineapple and Papaya both have anti-inflammatory properties (Bromelain and Papain respectively) They are not hard on your body the way that NSAID's are and can be taken freely to bowel tolerance. I've had good results with both the fruit and the pills in women who have carpal tunnel syndrome in pregnancy who don't respond or can not take NSAIDS.

Also, you might try a warm bath with a couple of cups of apple cider vinegar, or epsom salts. Both of those bring down inflammation in the body nicely and don't fight with NSAIDS, either.

I take aleve or ibuprofen. I refuse tylenol or aspirin. Tylenol for me is worthless. I think everybody reacts differently.

I have to take a double dose of Aleve for it to work - but, oh baby, does it do a good job when it does.

I use advil as well. dh uses aleve when traveling over mountains. tylenol is useless.

Aleve works well for me, but I have to take a higher dose than that.

My Dad was actually just talking about Aleve a few days ago and how it works really well with a double dose.

I don't know if it's different strokes for different folks, or what, but my experience was the same as Allison's. Taking prescription strength Aleve didn't even touch my joint pain :( I'm sorry it's not working for you :hug

It doesn't work well for me, either. Tylenol or Motrin are my go-to's for pain.

neither one has been effective so far. I have had major joint pain my whole life.

I usually take ibuprofen, 800 mg, for headache or joint pain. I don't often have Aleve around and can't remember the last time I took it to be able to compare it to something else. Tylenol does absolutely nothing for my headaches, however.

The night before last I had taken 800 mgs of ibuprophen and it did nothing. :hunh

I could try pinneapple and papaya. Thanks Allison. :)

Re: baths- They help whileI am in them if the water is hot enough to leave me bright pink when I get out. In about ten minutes the pain is back. :( And I don't fit in my tub. :bag

I do have some leftover tylenol 3. that works pretty well. I almost took that last night. After about 4 hours, the pain diminished appreciably. But 4 HOURS???!!!! :hunh It must have taken the inflammation down, too, becuase I woke up nearly pain free and very loose and wobbly. :doh But I started hurting within an hour of being up.

I did take a T-3 this morning, and then I took the Aleve about 2 hours later. Hopefully one will cover until the other kicks in. :-/ I think the reason antiinflammatories don't help is because the inflammation is not really the cause of the pain.I wish I knew what was. :tired

I feel your pain. *no pun intended*

Aleve is a joke.
Ibuprofren sometimes works in large doses. (meaning 800mg)
Acetaminophen is candy.
Aspirin works on certain headaches , but I don't know until I try. Usually 3 regular. (325mg per pill)

<snipped part about personal stuff and dosage>

I have a friend that can take two advil and get "drunk". She's loopy , silly and not all there.

<snipped again>

I have a high pain threshold and a high pain reliever threshold. I hate it.

Same here. I won't post how many Ibuprofen I take to just take the edge off - nothing else OTC works at all. My mother takes one Advil and is unconscious.

On a completely unrelated note, dd also has a high pain threshold. After her second open heart surgery (4.5 months old), she was alert and in pain. When I asked if she could have anything else to make her comfortable, the nurse said, "She's at her limit. Most other babies are completely snookered by the amount of pain meds we've given her."

Last time I was taken to my doc in the throes of a migraine , he gave me a shot. I laid there and begged for an ice pack , the lights to be turned off , a trash can to get sick in...and remained awake and in pain.
At one point the doc said "I can't give her anymore. I've given half a shot to a man twice her size and he passed out. This is insane. "

My pain pill threshold is silly high and it's super frustrating.

My father has Post Polio Syndrome and a missing vertebrae in his lower back. His pain specialist ended up putting him on a methadone protocol.

He takes homeopathic Hypericum30C in the night if his nerve pain wakes him up.

A strong Hyssop tea in your bath water might help, too.

I really need something with codeine in it to shift bad pain. Naproxen makes me puke.

:hug Sorry you are hurting.

yeah the tylenol 3 is what worked. I took the naproxen anyway hoeping that it will be working after the codeine wearsoff.

I hate narcotics.

me too. :hug I hate that my body is becoming possibly addicted to them , I hate what other people do when they find out what I take (usually beg or in one case steal), and I hate that it only takes the edge off the pain..just enough to function.

yeah I finally looked up what I had left over from my broken ankle last fall- That worked when I took it.

It was vicodin. 5/500
So vicodin or percocet. :(

Allison, I'd love to take baths but I don't fit in my bathtub. :blush Hypericum is St. John's woprt right? Does it have a psych effect? I ask because the way my depression and anxiety ptresent I'm not getting anywhere near it if it does.

<snipped the part about my personal meds and dosage>
Isn't that frustrating ?

In my dream home I'm having a super soaker tub put in with jacuzzi jets....and then I'm inviting Allison over to put various herbs in pretty bottles to line the windowsill.

the Hypericum 30C is a homeopathic preparation and it's not something that interferes with psych meds.

I could take a whole bottle of Aleve & not get any pain relief. (Ask me how I know:shifty).
I have prescription strength ibuprofen (800s), & arthritis strength tylenol that I take alternately to keep things down to a dull roar. But my "go to" is plain old Excedrin. (Maybe its the aspirin???).
Honestly, I just think that Aleve is pretty much usleless. (It is really hard on the stomach, too).
Hypericum30 and/or arnica200 works really well for me, too.

Well, the pain has subsided. I just kept taking the tylenol3.

:sigh

When the hurricane got here, the pain magically went away. :sick

Those deep sinus pressure headaches stink. I get them right before severe weather too. I've always been sensitive to the barometric pressure , but when it varies so wildly and changes so rapidly , there is NO pain relief until the storm has passed.

I also take Ibuprofen 800 for pain. According to my doc, I can take 3 of those a day (up to 2400 mil. in a 24 hr period)
