So we have these two huge pear trees that produce small pears approx 2 or 3 inches across. (I guess they are variety of pear:shrug3) We won't cut the trees down because they are such good shade, but the fruit just falls to the ground.

The squirrels sure love it, but I can't help thinking there must be something we can use this fruit for. Anyone know?

ETA: I'm still googling. but the leaves match these (http://www.magnoliagardensnursery.com/productdescrip/Pyrus_Bradford.html). However this variety supposedly doesn't produce fruit :think

Three inches across? That's the size of the eating pears we buy at the store! Perhaps you mean three inches top to bottom? It's possible that it's a full-sized pear tree but that the pears are small because you aren't giving it any special attention (fertilizers, lots of extra water, etc.).

If you aren't sure, I'd snip off a small side branch and bring that and one of the fruits to a local greenhouse. They'll know for SURE what it is and whether it's safe to eat.

:doh I'm such a flake today. They're not that big :blush Probably about an inch across. I googled some more and they look like Callery Pears. The most I found was a website with a recipe that had you crushing them up to make wine :giggle
