I have a peace lily that I love, it wilts when it needs water so I never have to worry about over/under watering.

Every other plant I've tried I've killed. Too much water. Not enough water. :shrug I don't know. I've tried a watering schedule, didn't stop the problem.

I need another plant that will "talk" to me like my peace lily. I don't mind getting another peace lily, but I'm very open to something different.

I need something tall-ish because I want it behind my sink so that when I wash dishes I don't stare at the stupid wood fence but something green. The current plants I have there lasted less than a year before dying.

I have spider plants that I haven't been able to kill yet. They turn a lighter green when they need watered. But they don't grow up, they grow out and then taper down.

I was going to say Christmas cactus, but they're not very upright except when they're small. Ours is off cuttings from my dad's 30+ year old plant. It's now 10ish years old. It "tells" you when it needs water by the leaves. If you feel them regularly, you can quickly tell when it's happy (plump and cool) and when it needs water (slightly warmer and a tad soft, but not so far as wilting). If you bought a young plant, it would be relatively upright for a couple of years. By then you'll probably want to stare at another plant and the Christmas cactus could move to a larger pot and different spot in the house. :)

Forgive the clutter and dust! :bag ETA: Those are the silk-dyed eggs from another thread; DH decided they'd look good on the cactus. :giggle

Have you thought about planting something outside? The prior homeowners here put knockout rose bushes and morning glories on the fence and it is gooorgeous and no work at all... well, now that it's in and established.

It's an excessively narrow path right there. If there wasn't a countertop b/w me and the window I could easily reach out the window and touch the neighbor's fence. And we need to keep the path open to get from the front to the back yard.

I was going to say aloe, but it isn't very big generally....

With the exception of my peace lily, me either. The only saving grace for my peace lily is that it so clearly tells me "I'm thirsty".

I was going to say aloe, but it isn't very big generally....

I have an aloe and I like it a lot, and it has survived my care so far. :lol But yeah, it isn't very big and cactus tend to be very slow growing. I don't mind a cactus garden in the window-- it is completely out of reach-- but it won't get big enough to hide the stupid fence that I hate staring at.

the kids are lobbying for a venus fly trap there and it probably isn't a bad idea, but I doubt it will get that big. ;)

I have no idea about ease of care, but my first thought was YES your family needs a venus fly trap, but then I wondered if E would really be ok feeding it (thought she might not like sacrificing the bugs etc).

can you paint the fence??
was gonna say i've never been able to kill a spider plant either but they are better hanging....maybe hang it from the top of the window so it hangs down into view?

She loves bugs, but has no problem with things eating each other. She is definitely my girl. :lol

Venus fly trap & cactus are on my list to get, but they won't fit in that spot well.

DH is adamantly against putting any holes in the ceiling to hang my plant. :-/

:lol:lol:lol
This reminds me of a story. The mother of a friend of ours lived in I think Virginia. Her mother had new neighbors move in next door from Texas. They put up a fence and her mother was not real happy about it, but said
"well I will just have to wait to see what color they paint it".
My friend - "mom, you said they were from Texas right?"
Mom - "yes"
My friend - "mom they are not going to paint that fence" :no

klpmommy

Yeah, there will be no fence painting here. :lol But even if it were painted it wouldn't change the fact that I am staring at a *fence*.

I miss my view from the kitchen in MI.

maybe you could paint your side with a mural?! :D Then at least it'll be a beautiful fence!

:lol Dh won't let me put a hole in the ceiling to hang a plant, I really doubt he'd go for painting a mural on the fence. ;) Really, a tall, easy-ish plant to care for is the cheapest & easiest solution.

Resurrection fern? If you kill that sucker, you can put it back into water and it'll revive. :giggle Other options are mint or lemon balm.

where would I find a resurrection fern? that might be the best thing for me. :lol

It might be easier to learn how to care for a plant than to find one that fits that space and is unkillable. :hiding

:lol I just seem to have a black thumb. :bag

but I know a peace lily would fit my requirements, I just would like something different since I already have one.

Amazon or a nursery. Give them a call and see if they know where to get a hold of one. My sister gave me one, and it's waiting until the baby's birth for revival. :heart

So I think you need this one - it is called Dinosaur plant

that's the same one Eowyn said. I have one. It is really small. I should probably find it and pull it back out for the kids. ;)

what about some herbs like mint or basil. Mint is pretty unkillable (and its about 18 inches high) and basil was an easy plant for me to keep alive (about the same height)

perhaps if you get a plant stand, it could take up some space and not have to be very tall :think

something simple like this maybe? http://www.amazon.com/Wrought-Shelf-Small-Corner-Hand-Made-Hang/dp/B000A4S96S/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1303753827&sr=1-2

I can't find anything online but i know they have tiny little plant stands that would liven up the place...

dh asked me today if I liked looking at dead plants while washing dishes. :bag

His opinion on my peace lily is that it is able to withstand dying & being resurrected again & again which is why it has survived 4 years. :shifty

What about a row of small pots instead of one plant?

I have some kind of fern I haven't managed to kill yet but I've had it several months & it's not that big yet.

Parsley grows easily & big, and needs a deep pot (it's related to carrots so needs space for a big tap root) so more space, plus then you can use it in cooking if you want. My chocolate mint is already growing well this year too, a few inches high & with some harvestable leaves already, I got it almost died back late autumn 2009 and it took longer to grow last year. Again I have it in a fairly deep pot, might find it an even bigger one sometime this year

I bought my plants yesterday. :)

this is what I look at when I do dishes:

Closer view of the fence:
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/klpmommy/P5080138.jpg

My attempt last year at covering the window. I bought two hanging plants, but dh didn't want to poke holes in the ceiling to hang them. They didn't cover like I wanted and they didn't last well. This is what it looked like yesterday. I recently trimmed all the dead parts.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/klpmommy/P5080136.jpg

And the plants we bought. I don't know how easy to care for they are, but they were inexpensive and the lighting/water requirements were reasonable. The big plants were $7 each at Home Depot. The little ones were $3 each. I repotted the flower and littlest plant and moved my aloe vera to share with my other cactus. I love it. :heart

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/klpmommy/P5080139.jpg

I moved my vines to the top of the cabinets, we'll see if they regrow any length.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e138/klpmommy/P5080141.jpg

I love it. It is so much better than the fence. P&E are going to help me water the plants once a week and hopefully they will last a while.

oh, t he two big plants are a dracaena and a snake plant. The flowers are an annual, gerbera (daisy?) and the other is a purple waffle.
