... to someone who is open to positive discipline and wants ideas and to understand developmental stages and stuff better but would be off put if the non spanking part of the message was too much at the forefront?

It is a father so bonus points if it's dad oriented or at least gender neutral

I think Jane Nelsen's Positive Discipline is pretty good. Kevin Leman's book, Making Kids Mind Without Losing Yours is fairly decent. He acknowledges people spank, but doesn't recommend it, IIRC.

What about Ames and Ilg's "Your ___ Year Old"? It does mention things within the realm of normal, including undesirable behaviors.

And what about How to Talk so Kids Will Listen and Listen so Kids Will Talk?
