My dd wanted one and I thought I would make some at home. However, the recipes I found on the internet.....well, something is off from the restaurant. Does anyone have a really good recipe to share??????

I am pretty sure the orginal, back in the day, had egg in it. My dad used to make one that was easily as good as the restaurant, and it had egg in it. :yes

We found out that rice milk makes a good orange julius. Lots of ice, a fresh orange or two, vanilla rice milk. You can add a frozen banana as well. You can use frozen oj concentrate if you want. But, I love it with the fresh orange.

thanks everyone! I'll try it with egg. That's what I didn't have in there. That and added sugar. I don't think it needs the sugar, but probably needs the egg to make it more creamy?

OR

the instant pudding packet?

I think I'm going to try the pudding first. Raw egg scares me......:nails

where i used to work they said the reason for the sugar being powdered was to make them "frothy"

You can use egg powder. But, seriously the rice milk gets a frothyness and the perfect taste if you use ice.

I make it with:

6oz frozen oj
1 cup milk
1 cup water
(I very those above two depending on illness- colds = less milk more water; picky children who need more calories get more milk
1/2c sugar (granulated or powdered)
1 tsp vanilla extract
ice to thickness/desire

Oh, and my Kitchenaid blender crushes the bajeebers out of that ice and makes it nice and smooth!! :yum

You could coddle the egg if you didn't want to use it straight up raw.

what does coddle mean and how do you do it???

---------- Post added at 12:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:03 PM ----------

ok. This is what we just made and it is pretty good. :yum

1 1/2 cups orange juice
1 cup milk
1 cup water
1 TBSP vanilla extract
1 egg
6-7 big ice cubes

Blend in blender to break up ice. I put a packet of xylitol (I am not eating sugar right now) in my cup. My dd did not. Both ways it is de-li-cious!!!!

The egg definitely made the difference. That and I added more vanilla too.

I will try it the other ways too!!

When you coddle an egg, you just barely cook it so that some of the bacteria are killed, but the egg still has most of the consistency of an uncooked egg. People do this sometimes when making Caesar salad if they are afraid to use a raw egg. You basically warm the egg up under the faucet, then submerge in boiling water for 1 minute.

thanks!

How funny that you would mention caesar saled because I made that today for myself and that's what prompted me to make the orange julius with the egg. I thought to myself I eat raw egg in the dressing, why wouldn't I eat it in the drink???? :lol:lol:lol:lol:lol:lol
