I'm knitting a hat for my senator (http://www.ravelry.com/groups/warm-hats-not-hot-heads) and I need some ideas. I don't want just a plain boring hat, but nothing too fancy schmancy that's going to take a long time either. :think

yes, this one: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/squared-away-ribbed-watch-cap My husband likes that best of all the hats I've knit him, as the top is flat and not all bunched up or pointy.
I do usually do like this person: http://www.ravelry.com/projects/Sweetestthing114/squared-away-ribbed-watch-cap (Decrease every round once at 40 stitches.)

I really like Tychus (http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEsummer05/PATTtychus.html) but it might be a bit too bold for what you're looking for.

My boys all love the regular guy beanie (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/regular-guy-beanie), and I add a few stripes to make it more interesting.

The seaman's cap (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/seamans-cap) is another favorite. I just make it a bit longer, because most people on ravelry complain that it is too short otherwise.
