I started another scarf in a lace pattern. It is still the black yarn - and I am not sure how well it will show up in a photo, but it is nice and soft. I will post photos if it goes well when I am done.

I'm working on a carseat poncho for DS. It's kinda like a snuggie, but the sleeves are in the middle and there will be a hood. The back of the blanket just rests on the top of the car seat when he is strapped in, and then when he is pulled out it can be wrapped around him again.

I'm working on a Lucy Bag (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/crochet-bag-2), with a variation, but I'm taking a short break from it to whip up one of those makeup bags from last month's thread, and using the makeup bag to practice putting lining in before I get to the big bag. I think it's going to be my new yarn bag and hook case. I went to JoAnn's yesterday and got the fabric for the linings and I'm so excited about them, they are just gorgeous, I can't wait to see it all put together.

I'm really disappointed that I didn't get more done last month. It just seems like I can hardly keep up with the housework, much less get any crafting done!

Jimi saw a picture in a spinning book of a knit hat that he really wants, called a tornado cap. It's knit and it's supposed to be a baby cap, but the construction is really simple, so I told him to pick out the yarn he wants and I'll convert it into an adult sized crochet hat for him. But he has to do the sewing up part! LOL. So that'll be an interesting project, when he gets the yarn he wants.

I sewed some corduroy curtains for a friend yesterday. It was kind of a disaster. I learned a lot of what NOT to do next time. I was following a great tutorial but misunderstood something so then had to improvise. Hanging up they look great. And I am in love with the corduroy for curtains. They don't pull back nice, though, so now we have to make a tie for them. I'll have to get a pic of that.

I got some small sewing projects done today. That feels great. :jump And now I have an entire huge drawer devoted to my knitting since I cleared out some of my sewing projects. :heart

I hate sewing. I really do. It's like :banghead for me. And I'll probably be making some more curtains for my friend and I have to get a blanket done this week (just some fleece lined with blanket binding). :giggle

Stephanie, I hate sewing too, it's one of the reasons I love crochet so much. But I told Mom yesterday while we were at the fabric store that I really need to find *something* I like doing with fabric, because there's too many pretty fabrics not to be able to use them for something. Not that I need another craft to spend money or time on. ;)

I didn't post in January, but I got 3 squares done for the 20YPB. Well, I guess that isn't technically true. By #3, I was disgusted with them and so I didn't bury the ends or block them. But I have 17 (I think) done now, so only 39 to go. :giggle

I have a friend who is having a baby on February 8th. She is one of those people who liked to be surprised, so she doesn't find out the sex ahead of time. I hate making gender neutral blankets, but I have no money right now to spend on yarn, so I'm using stash yarn. It is light green and yellow. I'm about half done with it.

Yes, it does. Once you know the motif, it's the same to the end. I started my SIL's yesterday, probably around noon, didn't really work on it much last night, and finished this morning.
Today I started one for myself when the SIL's was done, and I just finished the skein, which is 147 yards. It's not long enough for my taste, so I'll keep going for a little bit more with a second skein.
The one I made last week took 3 hours for a 200 yd skein.

This month's to do list: Finish the basket weave baby blanket I'm knitting and then do some booties to go with it. Knit one all of yarn onto my shawl - one more to go after this, but as the shawl gets bigger, the work gets harder, so I'm pacing myself - want it to be done by Easter. Finish the scarf with braiding I'm working on for my sil.

Since I have discovered that we have a soccer channel on our cable, I've found myself plopped down on the sofa knitting a lot lately (knitting and soccer go pretty well together so long as it's not a complicated pattern or a really intense game)

Pulled out my crochet blanket that I have been working on for oh 10+ years. I have 2 more skeins of yarn. I figure that since it is going to be buzzard conditions a blanket would be a great thing to have on my lap. That with being sick, knitting was making my arms ache.

I just came up with it =) My original intent was to make a mushroom, but I didn't have the right colors for that. The trunk is fleece, cotton batting, quilting cotton in a long rectangle. The top and bottom bits are quilting cotton and cotton batting. I rolled up cotton batting and sewed it into a fleece casing and then cut it to be angled like a tree branch and sewed that on, I found an acorn cap in teh floor so I drilled holes in it to make it a porch light. And the little leaf says 8 Ash Ln because it's for a little girl named Ashlyn who is turning 8. =D

Pictures tomorrow because the evening light won't show the color of the yarn well.
Now I don't want to go to bed, even though it's past 12:30am because I have another skein of Lion Amazing in Aurora and I want to make a neckwarmer with that yarn. I suppose I can do it tomorrow.

Jessica I love the tree stump! I imagine she loved it.

I was looking for a recipe the other day and stumbled across this idea. I bookmarked it to make for the boys' bedroom but am mulling over perhaps some other medium although I'm drawing a blank. Has to be easily dusted or washed and my original idea of stiff craft felt likely won't work. Might have to stick with the vellum.

Pulled out my dusty blanket (made my sore throat worse last night) then couldn't remember the pattern nor could find the pattern quickly. Thankfully someone on ravelry had posted a comment about how they did the pattern and reminded me of the pattern stitch (or at least I hope it is right). I have 2+ skeins of yarn left. I think I am going to make it a goal for the winter to finish this project, then I can have my nice basket for keeping all my WIP in instead of just this blanket and misc skeins of yarn.

This is a Jan project, but it was for a GCM who wanted to be surprised, so I waited to post the pictures until it was delivered. :) It's a little hard to see in the photo, but the lettering is the same gold and black as the flower stems, and it's inserted into clear photo corners so that it can be rotated, so the whole thing can go any direction. The flowers and leaves are crocheted, of course.

It was a fun project to make. I'm making four more, two large and two small, in bright primary colours to use as the boys' Easter baskets. They can use them as toy baskets after Easter. Back-loop crochet will make a ribbed fabric that's the same on both sides.
Front-loop crochet makes a flatter fabric that isn't ribbed, so flipping it inside out won't make it like back-loop.

I like the yarn, and it appears to hide the mistakes well.

yes, it does - here's the place I learned: http://www.tostetoes.com/twosocksoneneedle.htm and http://files.blog-city.com/files/aa/3830/b/2on1n.html

It's a lot easier than it looks (you work the heels individually, and then go back to rounds for the gusset.)

Finished the basket weave baby blanket and am not happy with it. I can't tell if I'm just being a perfectionist or what. I'm usually pretty consistant with my tension, but there are a couple of places it looks off. The yarn is baby weight, but I used really small needles but not intensly tight tension - it needs to be light weight for southern spring/summer. Oy vey.:-/

Here's Bear's 1st birthday shirt fir her party this weekend! I've had the applique done for a while, but finally sewed it to the shirt.

I already posted this in another thread...but I have no shame, so...

I made it using this (http://www.craftpassion.com/2010/11/crochet-basket-weave-afghan-baby-blanket-pattern-tutorial.html) pattern. My brothers are taking a trip to Haiti in a few weeks so I made this blanket for them to take to give to someone there. I'm hoping to finish a few other things for them to bring too. It's a little wider at the bottom even though I thought I was keeping things even, but I'm really happy with how this blanket turned out anyways. :D

I have about 11" of the 28" I need before I get to bind off for a sleeve opening and drop stitches to see the full pattern effect of the sweater.

I may or may not have been working on the sweater when I should have been studying last night. However, I'm well prepared for my test anyway so I'm not going to feel guilty.

I'm now working on a basic grey/black scarf that won't be finished. It's for the local CYT production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Junior. My kids' piano teacher is the director and asked me to make two somethings for Charlie's grannys that sit in the bed. This way the girls can 'act' like they're knitting (even though I'm crocheting the scarves) while other action is going on. She gave me a big skein of red last week, and I made a shell stitch scarf and net bag for the skein.

Oh, I know! But see, the problem is that we have a roommate, and our lease agreement says that I'll keep the shared areas of the house clean. So I can't let things pile up while I craft. Not to mention that my craft room STILL doesn't have a light in it, so I can only use it during the day when the kid is awake. :hissyfit

Oh, and I'm supposed to be a WAHM, so I feel guilty crafting when I could be working and actually making money to pay the mortgage. I'd rather be crafting than working, but the bills insist on being paid. :shrug

I can't believe how quickly you cranked that out, Punkie!

It is all stockinette, so the actual pattern moves very quickly. Can you do double-stranded knitting? If so, then you can really crank through it. If not, there's no better time to learn! There are only 2 rows that require you to knit triple-stranded, so those were the only ones that went really slowly for me... and I bet they still took less than 10 minutes. It just felt slow.

The patterns are very interesting, so it was fun. I've only done a handful of projects with colorwork... I'm far from an expert at it.

Did you see the boy version (http://petitepurls.com/Winter09/winter2009_pcheery.html) too? I thought about using the skull chart just because it is so cute.

Weaving in the ends was no fun, though... All of those colors made for a lot of ends :P~

Made a couple large wale corduroy skirts for dd2. I left one plain so that it could be matched with more things. I thought I could use the sash interchangably, too. Made a matching headband and am thinking about putting the flowers on the hat. The hat is too big right now, so I have awhile to decide. Oh, the heart doily is a little pocket.

I have not crafted anything in ages and need to get back on the bandwagon. I have a baby yoda jacket that I started back in the summer for a baby born beginning of November. I have a feeling it may be too small by the time I get it done. Why didn't I just get him a normal baby gift?

I finally got the walking foot I ordered from Joann's back in December, so now I can start quilting DH's quilt. :nails I'm sooooo nervous!!

Question for machine quilters: how do I get the bobbin thread to the top side of the quilt? Or is it okay to have it underneath?

Marielle
02-06-2011, 09:43 PM
Alison, you don't have to bring up the bobbin thread if you set the stitch length to 0 and make several stitches in place thus making a knot. However if you want to bring the thread up just pull on the loose end of the needle thread gently until you see a loop and only 1 stitch lift up. Pull that loop up with a pin or somethimg small and that'a the bobbin thread.

I got fabric to make myself a quilted purse. It was just going to be simple squares in a pattern. I don't cut straight lines well even with my rotary cutter, so I asked DH if he could cut the squares out for me--he's good at that.

He got all enthusiatic (avoiding studying for his TEST) and sewed the pieces together.

Now, they are all crooked and not lined up well.

Sigh. If I rip out all the seams and start over, he's going to be heartbroken. Plus, he cut the corners to make them lie flat because he didn't know how to join corners and avoid the bulk (sewed to the edge of every corner) so the squares might not survive being redone now.

If I don't rip out all the seams, can I live with a seriously flawed purse long-term?

WHAT DO I DO NOW??????????

Rea T
02-07-2011, 07:14 AM
Hmm. Secretly get duplicate fabric and re-do it?

I cast on a simple scarf w/ eyelash yarn last night, I need a project that is going to just fly by and I have several colors of eyelash yarn from my SIL. This skein should be just about long enough for one scarf. I also have about 50 yards of a red/orange blend and 120 of black so I'm going to attempt something with some stripes, I think.

02-07-2011, 07:15 AM
:hug TTL. That just stinks. :-/ I don't know what you do now. I'd laugh and love on my dh and start it all over. Is it mostly that you don't have more fabric that's the problem? Or are you worried about dh's reaction?

JessicaTX
02-07-2011, 08:28 AM
I'd let it sit in my craft bin for a year or two while I pouted about it. Then I'd probably finish making the purse, reinforcing all the seams and proudly show people what my dh had done for me. Of course...I don't think mine would ever go so far as to touch my sewing machine, but he's taken liberties with other things I had specific plans for before and ruined them with great intentions.

Aww, TTL, that was really sweet of him! But I understand your dilemma. Question: is it glaringly obvious and a really awful-looking creation? Because if not, I would use it as-is. It has character. :)

I did no crafting last week. Didn't even post on my Project 52 blog. I read a book instead. I needed to do that to save my own writing creativity. ("Save the Date" by Jenny B. The main problem is that he's tickled PINK with his effort to assist me, and I cannot think of a single way I can correct it and not hurt his feelings. Most of the wonkiness can be hidden if I iron it and quilt it to hold it into shape.

I think I have to use it as it and thank him. I just don't see anyway around it, and that frustrates me. I'm a perfectionist when it comes to crafts, and this is definitely NOT perfect.

Maybe I'll drown my sorrow in another shirt tonight instead :snooty

Sounds like a good plan, TTL. :tu I'm such a perfectionist with crafting, too. I think that's why I hate sewing so much. I would need some intense hands-on teaching to get that right and get the skills I need to do an exact perfect job.

Hopefully the purse will grow on you. I still can't believe your dh would do that. Of course my dh can't sew and is even more of a perfectionist than me, so I can't relate, but still! :giggle

I finished the cowl for a GCM! :heart

I'm irked with how the button placement turned out. I modified the pattern from 4 to 2 but now the corners turn up. :( I already weaved in the ends, but I still might be attempting to undo it. We'll see what she says! :wink But otherwise it's perfect! :heart

I am trying to use a small skein of Blue Savannah yarn that MudPies had given to me. I was trying to use the pattern that Mary shared in the Jan. Craft Thread. I've done it and frogged it 5 times now. There just isn't enough yarn there to get a decent length scarf. On the other hand, I've gotten to knit it 5 times. It is the. most. amazing. yarn!!!! I just have to figure out what to do with it.

For now, I've moved on. I'm making a pair of socks for BarefootBetsy.

I am not sure if that's what Mary used. . . she won a ball of Berroco Palace from me. There was a lot more yardage in that than in the fundraiser box.

You could contact recipients of the other boxes to see if they're going to use the yarn. All the yarn I sent for the fundraiser was from one dye lot. :)

You pick a very, very simple pattern, one where it doesn't matter if you can see the stitches or not. I'm basically just knitting every single row of this scarf. Once you get past the cast on and the first row or two it does get easier, at least for me. I had previously attempted something else...I don't remember what...with eyelash and gave up in utter annoyance. I think it might have been a stuffed animal.

The scarf pattern wouldnt print-so I made my own one up-Its not such intricate lacework-but I like the pattern. It reminds me of Florida-so it ties in well with what I had in mind. The Blue Savannah yarn is so silky smooth, and the colour works beautifully .

I've decided it isn't big enough to make anything worthwhile, so I'm just going to knit with it over and over and over and enjoy the feel of it in my hands till I can afford to buy enough to make something. I knit it and frogged it about 5 times and it is the only time I've not been upset about having to frog something. I just thought, "Oh, I get to knit more with it." I think I might end up just wearing it out that way. I'm going to use it to experiment on new stitches and patterns. It just feels so good!!!!!!

:giggle judging by her name I think she might really need some socks. :giggle

I'm calling them the "Ironic Socks." :haha I got the cuff of the first one done yesterday. I'm planning to sit and knit today (once I get off here) cause my tummy feels gross, so I've declared it a Sit-And-Knit day.

A tip I've heard for working with novelty yarns like eyelash is to carry a thread with it in a matching color, because you'll be able to see the stitches better in the thread and that will tell you where it is in the yarn. You want something like embroidery thread or a heavier crochet cotton, something heavy enough that you can see it, but light enough that it isn't going to majorly alter your guage.

how about some wrist cuffs, like a bangle bracelet except knitted? Then you could feel it on your skin after it's made.
I just did a search on Ravelry and found a pattern for handcuffs and thongs.

Oh you of little understanding.

I curbed my perfectionism into the exact opposite about six children ago. I could use some of my perfectionism to shine back through. However, I head very quickly into the realm of OCD and realized the ONLY way I was going to maintain my mental health with all these kids was to let it go and not care anymore.

So I went to a "knitting class" today at our church. As expected, there were a bunch of little old ladies sitting around chatting and knitting and having a good time. They kept saying how nice it was that a young person was there (I'm in my mid-30's :shifty).

It was, um... interesting. They make hats and sweaters for orphanages and that kind of stuff. The current project is to make bandages for lepers in India. So I spent my time crocheting several inches of bandage out of cotton crochet thread. Single crochet, 20 stitches back and forth with a tiny hook. I spent the time wondering how many bandages we could buy with the $$ they spent on the thread, which, ironically, was imported from India.

At this point, I'm committed to going back again, at least long enough to finish my bandage. I think I'm going to take my mom with me next time...

I was in a knitting group that was all older women, and it ended up being a pretty cool group (and a few other young people joined as time went on.) My current group is almost all young, and I miss have the more experienced women in the group, even if some were a little weird (like the lady who was saving all of her dog's hair from the vacuum to spin it and make the dog a sweater :shifty)

Have you read Knitting for Peace? She talks in there about crocheted/knitted bandages, and it inspired me to see if anyone was still doing that. It must feel so much nicer -- I know that hand-stitched socks and hats do. :shrug I should make some for our family and find out...

Cutting is my least favorite thing. It helps to have a cutting mat and rotary cutter.:)

Helps even more to have a DH who LIKES to cut with said rotary cutter and cutting mat and will cut out anything you ask him to cut :shifty

Silvermoon, as it turns out, I have the wrong gauge wire for the first lesson, so I need to get thicker wire. But it does seem well laid out with lots of pictures of each step.

I ended up creating these earrings from a beginner's kit and online tutorial:

Annd I made this bracelet just for fun, but I need lots more work on making the closures stronger.

Liamum, the earrings remind me of a necklace I made. I created all the links with glass faceted stones, like you did, and made a Y necklace. It went perfectly with a favorite red top that the washer eventually destroyed. It took a full afternoon to make, but I really loved the necklace with the top.
I'm wearing them in this old picture (really old picture).

With your bone structure, etc. I cannot see how you would look bad no matter what color your hair!

On topic ... I've not been crafting this month because I left my knitting bag at my parents' house. I may be attending a crochet class at church on Tuesday though!
