cold or heat for shingles pain?

my back nerves are hurting worse as the days go on, and i can't sleep on my left side because i wake up with that side completely cramped up. and my back just aches. does anyone know if cold packs or heat would be best? i lean towards cold, because i'm afraid heat might stir up the rash, but yet heat might soothe the muscles. i dont' know. any advice?

thanks Linda! Actually, the ice packs on my back are helping, so i'm sticking with that for now. I took a nice long nap today, and i feel a little better today, just so wiped out. but a little more hopeful :)

I remember heat helping some. Mostly a lot of pain meds. :hug
