After I bought some half gallon jars, I read that- whatever group makes these recommendations- no longer feels it is safe to use them for canning. Could I freeze things in them? and what would be that process? TIA!

I don't know if you can freeze in 1/2 gal jars because of the concern for expansion and the glass cracking. If you do try it make sure to leave lots of space at the top. Maybe someone else will know more. They ARE terrific for bug-proof, rodent-proof dry goods storage though. I keep meaning to get more of them for that purpose.

Hmm, never thought to use them for that either. We could use a few containers like that, I like to keep a stock of different types of grain, and can't leave things in bags...

I've frozen stuff in them, just leave 2 inches of head space. Never had a problem

Thanks for the replies! It's good to lnow that you can freeze in them- because there are just some things we need a half gallon at a time of.

We used to use them for tomatoes & fruits.
But I think that their best use is as storage jars. As others have said, they keep out pests better than anything else,. And I love that I can see what I have in a jar, without trying to read what I wrote on a label.
