for DS's 2nd bday i'm thinking of making a cheesecake & dying the topping blue & have Spiderman fishing out of a little boat sitting on top (he looooves spiderman, boats and fishing)
I'm thinking modeling chocolate would be best for the boat & spiderman because I don't think anyone will want to eat fondant...but I'm reasonably certain that chocolate will be eaten :yes I'd rather just not use corn syrup if I don't have to and so far I've only found recipes that call for corn syrup :(

I don't *think* regular corn syrup is as bad as hfcs...not sure...I'll bet there's a thread on it somewhere around here to find out...:think

I'd try golden cane syrup (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_syrup) (Lyle's is a common brand).

Honey will not work it is the wrong consistency. Maple syrup is way too thin as well. A golden syrup *might* work bit I would not even try ..it would be an expensive mistake.

I may try making my own sugar or cane syrup. i think next time I go shopping i just need to see what's available and go home & research my options

Is it? I don't recall it being that pricey here. And on some UK boards I looked at it's often used as a substitute for corn syrup, since they don't seem to have corn syrup in England.

I wonder if rice syrup would work?

Yes, we don't have anything called cane syrup but we do have Lyle golden syrup. I'm not sure what the difference is. I'm not sure if that would do what you want. I would take the easier route of using a little toy figure of Spiderman.

O/T, if you look on the tin on the link above, the small writing under the lion is the verse from Judges 14, Samson's riddle 'out of the strong came forth sweetness'. :)

It probably is pricey in the States...I'm guessing it would be an import.

So who can point me towards a recipe? Golden syrup is very common here and dirt cheap, much much cheaper than maple syrup, and we don't get corn syrup at all. So I can try the golden syrup option!
