Pumpkin vines climbing a fence

I have Musque de Provence pumpkins growing along a fence (and a tolerant neighbor). These are expected to get 8 - 15 lbs.

Will I need to support them somehow or will the vine get strong enough to hold them?

Reading the book "Square Foot Gardening" he says that pumpkins and even watermelon will support themselves if grown vertically. It sounds weird, but it apparently works. We're doing it with cucumbers.
