At what age are children able to be less reactive toward siblings? I understand that reactivity is something with which even adults struggle but what if the child has been given the tools and a calm reaction or walking away has been modeled for them? When are they finally able to stop reacting to *mostly perceived* threats and definite misunderstandings?

My eight year old lets the four year push his buttons and though I've given him scripts and examples of what to do instead he still gets sucked into the button pushing. He's is also my most reactive child in general. Kind of lives outside of himself if that makes any sense? I dunno. I just want him to realize that he doesn't have to feel fight or flight (in which he always chooses fight) every time his little brother acts like a four year old. He can shut down the button pushing by simply walking away. :think

None of my step kids have grown out of that yet!
