how long do you take them? I've been taking allegra D and flonase for a month or so now, but I quit giving E her Zyrtec because she seemed to be doing better. She's still coughing some though.

For my big girls, I give them April-Oct. If I miss we get nosebleeds, congested, sneezy, rashy....
Amberlyn still coughs some with the meds, but the cough tells me that perhaps there is some post nasal drip going on.

Wow, that's a long time. One of the reasons I quit giving the Zyrtec to E was because she was starting to sleep worse, and I was concerned she was having a corn reaction. :nails So we've been giving her an expectorant before bed instead (her main issue right now is coughing, and that's gotten much better).

It sometimes helps to look up allergies by your zip code to see if they expect high counts in the next few days. I like http://www.pollen.com/allergy-forecast.asp (it also shows the top 3 sources of pollen for that zip currently). http://www.weather.com/outlook/health/allergies/weather/ is another site I use.

I think since different people suffer from different allergens in the air, you'll have to just go by how you and your kids seems to be doing. You can also keep an eye on the allergy counts in your area with the local weather websites. If you want to ease off of the heavy stuff (the prescription meds or heavy OTC meds) as they lighten up, but still continue to need something, then you could try some homeopathic remedies, like Hyland's Seasonal Allergy Relief (http://www.seacoastvitamins.com/supplement/hylands-seasonal-allergy-relief-60-tabs-1945). I think it works really well, and you might find you like it a lot. You can also try a tablespoon a day or raw, local honey. I've heard many people swear by this. It's nice to have a few more natural remedies as options as well.
