View Full Version : Um...I didn't know my dishwasher had a dryer vent you should clean out!

So, I started a facebook group here (http://www.facebook.com/pages/UmI-didnt-know-my-dishwasher-had-a-dryer-vent-you-should-clean/282078522894?ref=mf) ("Um...I didn't know my dishwasher had a dryer vent you should clean out!") b/c last night as I was sponging off the inside of my dishwasher door I discovered the grille can come off. Inside was 5 yrs. worth of disgustingness. So, so gross. Blech. Ew. Nasty! I cleaned it out and posted a FB status update and discovered that apparently I'm not the only one who was unaware of this! :lol So please, check behind the grille and post pics of the nastiness you find! And fan my page if you're on FB. :D

Unfortunately I don't have "before" pics, but here's what I'm talking about:

The vent, from the outside:

The grille before it's popped off:

The cleaned-out grilled and vent:

How did you get your vent to come off? Mine looks like it has a place to put a screwdriver in and pry it up...but I'm afraid I will break it!

It might help to load up the dishwasher and run a load first. I cleaned mine out about 30 minutes after the cycle ended and the clean dishes were emptied out. There was gunk in there, but it was pretty soft. Ewww!

Canadiyank -- since you got me into this mess, PLEASE tell me how you got all that gunk out? The "filter" part I can wash in the sink, but the door -- it's all stuck!

Heh. So, first I sponged off what I could. And I soaked the grill part in the sink. But then I kept the door open flat, placed a large bowl underneath, and poured bowls full of hot water through to the other side until it ran clean. I loosened any debris with Q-tips and a toothbrush and then did more hot water. I probably had to do it 6-7 times. And put a bunch of towels down under the bowl, it made a big mess.

Ew ew ew.

Yes, I know what you mean about previous owners -- I have decided that the people who sold us this house were lying, dirty, smelly people:sick The lying is in reference to the fact that they sold us a house that had three leaks in the first week of ownership -- and they signed the realty documents that there were no know water problems.

Now, back to my housework :sick

I'd love to join your group and give them to you that way, but I'd like to protect my anonymity (both for the sake of my dishwasher and family LOL)
The bowl worked wonderfully. I ran a rinse cycle first (with the cover off, hope that didn't ruin anything LOL)

I have been having rinsing issues since we bought this house, my dad took everything (except the vent apparently) apart for me in October to try to locate the problem. I will be tickled pink if this fixes everything as a new dishwasher is not in the budget right now

Nope, there's a vent. It's round and doesn't look like there's an easy way to take it off. The plastic looks flimsy. I'm going to have to find the owner's manuel... Fun... :sick

Mine was completely caked with THICK hard water deposits. No way was air going through there. The dishwasher doesn't work anyway because of drainage problems (probably a clogged hose), but I did scrape and bang the gunk out of the vent and the cover is soaking in vinegar right now.

Ours is less than a year old. The vent slides out nicely, no little arms to break off. There was a little gunk in there but not bad. I wonder if the fact that I *never* use the dryer function helps any.

It's against my religion to run the dishwasher dryer. I refuse to pay for something that will happen for free if I leave them in there long enough, lol.

The only time I use the dryer is when I turn it on before bed and that's because I can't turn it off when it's done :) But even when it's running there is still a bit of steam that comes out through the vent. Mine was nasty, but we've lived here for 4 years, and I don't know how long the previous people had it or if they cleaned it... I think it's about 10 years old.

So I posted a few pages back, a thank you, then trotted off to check mine. It was nice and clean despite over 5 years of ownership. Brilliant, excellent, way to go me.

We just moved. Into a house that had been abandoned for a year and before that owned by people who didn't care a toot about a lot of house stuff. So, after my husband fixed the DW today, I knew I had to clean it. I was afraid, very afraid, and I should have been too! Oh.my.goodness. I did the best I could with it and am now running the DW with vinegar and baking soda per a "how to clean the DW site." I suppose when it's done, I should take the vent back off and tackle it again. I'm far too pregnant to be dealing with this junk! Or at least, that's the excuse I'd like to make.

And yes....just how does hair get into the DW? Then again...do I want to know? Probably not.
