i want to make these but i have no sugar. can i use either brown sugar, maple syrup, agave nectar or honey? and how would i substitute it?

i don't want the cookies to taste like honey though. :)

I would guess brown sugar, but maybe use a little bit less??? I think a liquid sweetener would affect the texture more.

Whatever you choose.... report back!!!!

well i'm not much on experimenting, so i prolly won't try anything unless someone gives me a report on something that's tried and true. :)

if you don't use sugar, it won't work. I mean, it may work, but it won't set up like a cookie. You might have to eat it with a spoon.

ok, i found out that you can substitute brown sugar for white sugar at a 1:1 ratio. so i'm gonna try that. :)

I thought you were supposed to eat the first 2 or 3 with a spoon? :giggle

I just remembered that I did try a batch with reduced sugar a while back and it was a bust. :-/

i made them with brown sugar and they are delicious!!!

do the ones with honey set up right? and do they taste like honey? i don't like honey, so that would ruin it for me, lol!

They do set right, though I add just a little extra oatmeal and use a little less honey than I would sugar. I think they just taste like chocolate, but then again I like honey so I guess you'd have to experiment to see if you'd like it.

So, you're saying that if I would normally use 2 cups of sugar, then I'd use 2 cups of brown sugar instead? Sorry, I don't convert recipes well. :O

I LOVE these and have been making them like crazy lately! :shifty It would be nice to have a variety! Do they taste *better* than sugar?

With honey or brown sugar, they're frequently gooier or sticky. Edible and tasty, but they lose the special texture. You can make them more like clif bars, though.

When you reduce the sugar too far, you lose the holding power.

the ones made with honey do taste like honey. It's a very specific taste. Some kinds of honey are better than others. I'm not a big fan of clover honey, myself.

i used 2 cups (packed) of brown sugar in place of the 2 cups of white sugar. the set right, tasted great and the texture was the same too. :) :rockon

guess i'll skip the honey ones if they taste like honey, lol!
