Someone posted on freecycle that she had a 13 gal. garbage bag full of fabric to give away. I got it and just finished sorting through it.

:jawdrop I have hit the motherlode.

A TON of fabric, most of them odd-shaped scraps but totally useable for patchwork stuff, and some are even a yard or two (or even more) of uncut-into material. And some of the most adorable prints!! I ended up emailing her to ask her what it is she does--she had mentioned having a home business for which she buys a lot of material--and it turns out she makes nursing covers, mei-teis (sp?--I'm suddenly blanking on that), bibs, burp cloths, etc. Man does she have great taste in fabric! I'm dying that I don't have more time--I so want to make a patchwork twirly skirt for AJ, and a smock for PJ, and a couple dresses, a quilt or two, and and and.... :giggle

So here's what she gave me:

a bunch of reds and pinks...

...many greens...

...loads of blues (my favorite color, woohoo!)...
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2487/4232554448_0d0770b890.jpg

...a few yellows, browns, and oranges, as well as, like, three kinds of white minky!...

...AND, there were four pillows in there, too!

They just need to be stuffed and sealed. Sort of a weird size, though--anyone have any ideas for how they could be used? I was thinking of making them part of a swap package, but I don't know how to finish them off first. I mean, I know HOW, I just don't know what they'd be used for and thus what I ought to stuff them with. Make sense? Ideas?

Ooo, I will totally do pics after PJ is in bed. Have to upload photos for the fam from AJ's bday today anyway. :)

I don't know if she has a site or not--she said she's not on etsy because there's so much competition, so I don't know where she sells from.

Those fabrics are beautiful. :)

I think I'd use those pillows as travel pillows or pillows for using behind your head when you're on a recliner or couch. KWIM?

cherry pits - interesting idea. would love one of those heating pads.

or are they the right size to fill for little play pillows for the girls or their baby dolls?

I was thinking about doll bed mattresses. But I'm not sure they'd be the right size. I think they might be just a smidge too small. But as heating pads they'd probably be the perfect size.

I'm going to look into that cherry pit thing some more. That is brilliant. :thumbsup

You can also fill them with wheat or rice for microwaving to make into a heating pad.

I wish I could take credit. Another mama here patiently ate all the cherries and reserved the pits to make one for someone she loves. I think it's in the Let's See What You're Working On thread.

at the fabric store the other day, i overheard a woman saying that corn (like unpopped popcorn kernels) were the 'perfect' thing for heating pads, etc. she said it's far superior to anything else (like rice). she didn't say why but that might be another possible solution besides cherry pits for the heating pads :)

cherry pits are apparently completely washable, and they won't pop like corn can :giggle

I'm up for some swap scraps too (were you the one lamenting this swap that you didn't really have anything to swap?)

Awesome! I love the blue one with the mod looking flowers, right in the middle of the pile.

That would be a fun bunch of fabrics for a trip around the world quilt. :yes

There are a few ways to do it, but it is basically diamonds or squares of increasing size.

Here's a neat one:

Here's another, more traditional one:

We have one that dh's grandma pieced but never finished, and after she passed away someone discovered the top in the attic. It's now finished and on Levi's bed, and I just love it. If his bed wasn't such a wreck I'd take a pic. :shifty
