Thread Counters and markers?

In knitting how do those thread counters I have seen work?

Also, do you use them in conjunction with thread markers?

I just use a scrap yarn and count from that.

yeah, or how many rows, etc. I will use them to mark a section if the pattern calls for it and then count from where I put the scrap yarn.
