...edible things that look like knitting needles? It's my LYS' anniversary this weekend, and I'm doing a cake. A ball of yarn with needles sticking out of it. Ideas?

When in doubt, marzipan or fondant always works. :) For edibility... long thin cookies or breadsticks? (the crackery kind) You could put some kind of gumdrop on the end as a topper. Ooh! Depending on how long the sticks need to be, you could use pocky!!

Those coconut covered cake balls (I'm not sure they sell them where I live, but I think they are probably found near the Twinkies and similar snack cakes) might pass as a ball of yarn. Or you could ice and decorate cupcake tops to be balls of yarn without having too much icing. Black licorice nibs would make good knitting needles if you lay them flat on the cake. Are you going to share pictures when you're done?

I don't know the "cake etiquette" for just how edible it has to be...

I'd be tempted to use uncooked pasta covered in fondant. But -- while edible -- that wouldn't be very yummy. Like I said, I don't know if that violates cake-maker etiquette.

How about a straight candycane like stick that you could get wet and shape the end so that it is pointy...if that makes sense :giggle

Or you could use chopsticks and take them out before eating.

A long rolled cookie (like Pepperidge Farm's Pirouettes) dipped in chocolate?

chop sticks? I know they're not edible, but they're food-related...food-safe...

I like the candy cane idea...maybe add a nonpareil on top for the flat end of the needle, and wipe the other end with a wet washcloth until you get a point? Wonder how many people would think you licked it to get that way... :shifty

Pretzel Rods are the first thing that came to my mind. Coat them in thinned icing.

:lol I think I can get candy sticks that are not peppermint-looking. :think

I have a ball cake pan. I'll roll out marshmallow fondant and wrap it around the ball. Then I'll stick the "needles" on top.

I will take pictures. I will need validation. :giggle

This may be too late, but the first thing that came to mind was Pocky (http://www.asianfoodgrocer .com/product/glico-chocolate-pocky) Our local grocery store carries it in the World Foods aisle.

it'll be great! :rockon i honestly would just use skewers with a fondant ball at the ends... i wouldn't be worried about it being edible. :shrug3

It's supposed to be the LYS logo of a twisted hank of yarn. Oops. :giggle

ok, the yarn ball cake is excellent.

The yarn logo cake :giggle looks umm, bizarrely delicious in spite of other possible interpretations of the centerpiece...is that cream cheese frosting? :yum Wish I could have a piece ;)
