My sister creates custom designed cakes. Everything from traditional wedding cakes to sculpted artist pieces for celebrations. She talked me into coming down to her restaurant to lend a hand with her latest project: an elephant birthday cake. After two full days of work, we're both really happy with the results.

The cake is chocolate with a rich rum butter cream. But the outside is covered in fondant which we painted with edible paints.

It was for a woman's birthday. Apparently she is a huge collector of elephants. I heard she's trying to get in the Genius book for biggest elephant paraphernalia collection.

I wasn't there for the reveal, but I heard she started crying. In this case, it was a compliment.

I also got to make my nephew's birthday cake. (While I was waiting for my sister to make a new batch of buttercream and fondant.) He wanted a G-force birthday with a replica of a Guinea Pig. He even picked out the picture of the Guinea Pig. :tu

It was so fun watching him watch me work. He had all sorts of suggestions about where to place the whiskers and what color of M&M's I should use for the eyes. (P.S. Out of an entire bag filled with M&M's we found only FOUR brown M&M's. What's up with that?!)

My sister said he was so excited about the cake that he slept in the living room all night to keep it company.

You've got some serious cake decorating talent going on in this thread!!!! That is too cute how your nephew "bonded" with his guinea pig cake. I don't think I would be able to bring myself to cutting into either of those. I wouldn't want to destroy them.

My 3 yo is sitting here whining and INSISTING that they are NOT cakes. NO. THOSE ARE NOT CAKES! :giggle


Amazing work! She needs a cake blog! I'd love to see process pictures, too.

My sister made me a luau inspired cake a year ago for DD3's first birthday. I tried to find a picture of it on her photostream and could only find a tiny thumbnail:
