I found a source for some really nice recycled wool yarn. She dismantles thrift store sweaters, then overdyes them with vibrant acid dyes. I found a huge bunch of a colorway that is exactly what I had pictured wanting for (yet) another pair of shorties for Smiley. The description says that the wool is in two skeins, each skein unknotted and unjoined. It is 100% wool merino, worsted weight.

Any reason this wool would not be a good choice for his shorties?

The only thing I could think of would be that it might be scratchy. Since it has been redyed, I'm wondering if it might not be as soft as what you would want for shorties.

But it could be fine. Can you see/feel it before you buy?

Nope. It's an online sale. :/ I can get a 180 yard hank and a 170 yard hank for $12.50 plus something like $3.50 shipping.

merino is soft in every instance ive dealt w/. being merino wool i would take the chance :shrug3 if it's not as soft as you'd like you can soak in conditioner to soften it up

I'm totally going for it. If I hate it, I can always sell the crocheted woolies on DS. :shifty

The softness of merino is from the small micron fibers that particular breed of sheep grows rather than any treatment that is done to it so overdying shouldn't affect that. It might in other cases but shouldn't unless the dyestuffs she used added some unpleasant stiffening effect but that would seem unlikely.
