I used size 14 on a Simplicity pattern http://simplicity.com/dv1_v4.cfm?design=4236

I did the pink skirt with this fabric
http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2684/136/33/646957337/n646957337_1645951_6286415.jpg

It turned out like this

And my skinny friend tried it on

I guess I will have to go now by the measurements on the back of the patterns NOT the sizes :/

Small is an understatement, my friend is a size 4 and the pattern was size 14 :hunh

Love the skirt!!! :heart

Yeah, about those sizes - I used to be a 6 in store clothes, and was a 14 in patterns. Don't want to know what I'd be now at a store size 10 (and I don't wanna know)!

Bites that it didn't fit, but it's adorable!! You are very talented. I hope I can sew like that one day!

Yes, the pattern sizes are -completely- different from store sizes. And clothes made at home will fit like tailored pieces, which is very different from off the rack items. Check the pattern maker's website for more info.

What kind of waist is that?

It fit, it fits :shifty I have to put it through my head, my thighs are too big :giggle
Now for next time I plan on adding an inch to each side of the pattern so it can fit a little looser.

You can fix that. Just take and sew your elastic where your want to add more room in the waist. That way before you cut it you don't lose the elastic in the casing. Then you add extra material between the split. So say in the center back you want to add more room. sew two straight lines with a about inch inside. Then cut down that inch you can go all the way down or just a bit depending on how tight it is. Add extra fabric and it should fit better. Next time cut the pattern out bigger. Pattern sizes are rarely close to actual sizes esp in Adults.

niiiice! oh and cute shoes :rockon

Since patterns are not sized like RTW and each pattern company varies, just measure the pattern pieces and subtract the seam allowances then wrap that measurement around yourself with the measuring tape. Really helps to see if a certain size will fit.

yes always go by the measurments!! I usually go 1-2 sizes bigger than i am or it won't fit right!

I just got my copy of that book. I haven't attempted to sew anything yet. I started reading it and then realized I needed to have more concentration power than I had at the moment. Its on my to start list today!
