I need a good set of bunkbeds for cheap. DH said he'd let me get some if I find them for under 300. We need bunkbeds pretty soon in my mind because I'd like to get the room fixed before the baby is born and get the big kids used to the new sleeping arrangements before then too.

where do I look?

You could make your own cheaply and easily if you have a circular saw and are a little crafty.

We were lucky enough to buy a set of bunk beds at a 2nd hand shop for $50. They were red metal, full on the bottom and twin on top. there wasn't a scratch on them. The best part? They literally took DH & I less than 10 minutes to put together. I have never been a fan of the metal beds but we couldn't pass up the price and they matched DS's room perfectly. We have had other bunk beds in girls rooms that took FOREVER to put together and didn't hold up well. These don't bugde when you shake them. They are extrememly sturdy. We will probably be buying to more sets of bunks because we are iin the process of adopting and we are open to a sibling group of up to 3. We will buy the closest we can find to these.
Our only concern with set of bunks we got was that when we put the twin mattress on the top, there was ample room for a child to slip their leg down in the side and get it stuck in the metal support bars. DH bought some sheets of plywood and cut one to fit the top and one to fit the bottom and painted them red to match the bed. We then decided we didn't want a full size mattress on the bottom and since the wood board was there, having a twin there instead works fine and is safe. DS loves it because it gives him an table/area to play with some of his toys. It looks like it's supposed to be that way.
The set we have is almost exactly like this one, except that DS ladder is on the front of his set. He doesn't sleep up there yet, though.
