Does anyone have one and recommend it? I am not in that good of shape. Can I get one on freecycle do you think or how much do they cost? :shrug

My MIL gave us one...I'm not sure how much they are. This is like the one we have, for $120: Push Mower (http://www.amazon.com/Scotts-20-Inch-Classic-Mower-2000-20/dp/B00004RA3E/ref=pd_cp_hi_1?pf_rd_p=413863601&pf_rd_s=center-41&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B00004R9UK&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=06BDA6SAQKHBGD5DTNK0)

You could probably find one on freecycle, I'd think. Ours works great on flat lawn but is much harder on sloped.

Thank you, ladies! This helps a lot! I am excited. It is a flat yard, but kind of big - not like even an acre, but a pretty good sized lot anyway. I will definitely think about this.

Do the blades get dull and if so can you just replace them?

My dad has one of these kind:

I don't think all push mowers are created equal. Some are really hard to push & others are easier. I'd probably not buy a big box store brand but would go to a specialty gardening store.

I got ours on Craigslist for $40, and really like it!
I don't see why people think they're harder to use than a motored mower, since you have to push them just the same! And when it's a basic push mower, you're pushing a lot less weight than having to push a motorized machine. I think you'd really enjoy it!

So you only want a non-motorized mower?

Yes! I am just looking there now and cannot believe the stuff there! Wow! Thank you for the encouragement. I think I would enjoy it too. I am not positive, but if not, I guess I can put it on Craigslist. :giggle

Well I have never used one, so I am not sure. What did you have in mind? :shrug

The best push style mower I ever used was self-propelled. We still had to push it but it was not nearly so difficult.
It also had the large wheels are the back that made it easier to push and to turn. :twocents

Does this style make a lot of noise and use gasoline? :shrug

If it's pretty flat then it's doable, I found it's definitely more work than the electric one I have now but not as hard as our previous gas self-propelled mower. That thing was a behemoth! It was self-propelled but still *work* to make it around, but then we have lots of hills and three levels to mow. We always kept the push mower on the lowest level so we didn't have to haul the gas mower down there.

I've seen sharpening kits for sale for the blades, so I'd assume you'd just sharpen them like you do regular mower blades.

Our local hardware store offers sharpening. You don't have to replace the blades, but you should have them sharpened about once a year. We have one, and we love it. :yes

We have a reel mower that is probably 30years old. We paid $5 from a second hand shop. I love it. I don't find it difficult to use except when we let the grass get out of control. We need to have the blades sharpened before next year but I have my dad do that.

Have only read the OP but wanted to chime in -

If you can find a really old one on Freecycle and get the blades sharpened, that might work well. We tried and couldn't find anything locally. So we bought one new that was made in Germany; guaranteed to not need sharpening for 10 years :rockon It only weighs 14 lbs and it SOO easy to use, I was mowing the lawn at 9 months pregnant without any difficulty. Cost $300 but we figure it was a good investment. I can ask DH about the brand/model if you want. :)
