View Full Version : how to fill my garden beds

I'm going to embark on SFG late this coming winter, but I refuse to spend a bunch of $$$ on organic materials to fill my 184 sq ft of bed space. I've got a bit of homemade compost, and plan to ask neighbors to send their leaves our way instead of "donating" them to the city. Also will use some shredded newspaper, see if I can get an area horse rancher to donate some manure. But 184 sq ft, each bed 6" high, is a lot of volume.

Any other ideas? Online sources for bulk compost/vermiculite, etc.? Any SFGers out there who started with, say, 3" of bed material and did well?

TIA. :)

I'm trying to get my dh to go get city compost for my garden. When the city collects green waste, it sometimes makes compost and gives it away. :tu

My city creates compost from the lawn trimmings it collects, too, but they sell it. :shrug

Anyway, I remembered our neighbor 2 doors down does lawn maintenance, and he is now donating most of the material I need for the beds. :rockon
