I've never done it with apples, but I use a food processor instead of my mill for peach butter because the processor does a better job. :yes

I've never made apple butter, but I don't see why you couldn't use your food processor for that. Mills are generally meant for removing seeds from foods like tomatoes and raspberries and such by pressing them through a sieve.

the only thing I'm worried about is it not being as smooth..& hoping the processor will blend the peel really well.

In that case, I think yes, you probably need a mill or press. I can't imagine apple sauce or butter with peels in it, even if they are small.

You could peel the apples first. Do you have one of those nifty apple peelers? We did that before we got a food mill.

That's a good idea! I'll look for an apple peeler !

Only if you are making a small amount. I made apple sauce with a blender and with a food mill this year and peeling apples and removing every scrap of core was way too much work. Also, the sauce turned out super-pureed, closer to thick paint than apple sauce and I tried not to overblend.
