fig preserves

So...I wanna make some fig preserves. I found a recipe, but I wonder if I could make them in the crockpot. Any ideas?

Also, what will be the easiest/cheapest way to can them? Can I just freeze it? Can I can it w/o any special equipment?

I'm new to all this and I can't find any helpful resources at the library. TIA!
