I am completly clueless when it comes to gardening. I have these plants in my flower bed and since I did not plant them (we moved in last year), I have no idea if they are plants I'm supposed to keep or not. :O Can you help me sort these out? By the way, I live in Quebec, if that's any help. :shrug

Plant 2 is pretty, I'd keep it. Not sure about the rest. :)

i say forget about whether they're weeds or not. If you like them, keep them, if you don't like them, pull them out.

All plants are weeds somewhere ;)

I don't have the foggiest idea, although I *think* plant 3 might be a weed... :scratch

You can take a cutting of each one, go to a local nursery and ask one of the gardeners... It's a great way to learn too, by taking a look at what they are selling...

I was thinking that plant 3 looked like a weed as well. :yes

I think #5 is echinacea (coneflower) and it looks like it's about to bloom. It will attract butterflies.

I'd probably leave them for this season and see what happens.

:yes That's what I was going to say.

#4 looks to me to be some sort of mint--probably catnip(which is a local plant here).

#3 I think is a flower, but wait and see what it does.

#1 looks the most like a weed--but it might surprise you!

#6 I think is a weed too--but wait and see!

I say leave them and if they end up having teeny tiny flowers, they are probably a weed--and then yank em up.
I've lived on our farm in OH for 5 years now and I'm still learning the difference between a flower/wanted plant and a weed!

I'd be very interested in an update with pics of what these plants/flowers do! :)

Thanks for all the replies, this is very helpful!

About the echinacea, yes, I remember my mom telling me I had some in there. :yes

I'll try to update when I'm more certain of these plants! :)

Black eyed susan? I think they are in the same family as the echinacea/cone flower. :think

3rd one down is sedum. I'm pretty sure the 5th one is the echinacea if you haven't been able to locate it anywhere else ;). 4th looks like it could be blackberries to me- are there thorns? 2 looks similar to foxglove to me (it isn't but looks related) and foxglove along with many of it's relaties are poisonous. Might be good to know in case kids are going to be out there without constant supervision (mine are so I can't plant anything poisonous). It's beautiful. 1 and 6 look like they could definitely be *something*- might want to just leave them and see ;).

my two cents :think

1- some type of phlox or it could be hibiscus???
2- another type of phlox. Do these smell pretty?? We have several different types; white, pink, purple. Some are really fragrant. Others not so much.
3- sedom
4- spearmint. Take a leaf off and smell it. Does it smell minty??? You can use this to run on your skin and it keeps mosquitos away. It is is a good thing to have around in the flower bed if you have chickens, since they do not like it.
5- euchinacea/ coneflower. Excellent butterfly attracting plant!
6- this one has me stumped. I do not know the name of it, but we have them too. They really do not do much and so I have been trying to eliminate them and make room for more pretty flowers. Is that discrimination????? hahahahahahahahaha
