View Full Version : He is just not a normal dog

Because I can't just have a NORMAL dog. :no

My Bowie is a wonderful dog. He picked ME out when we went to met his litter, and has been my buddy ever since. He's hit a growth spurt lately, so has jumped from sixty pounds to at least seventy... seems at last that German Shepherd grandaddy is making his mark known. Still tries to fit in my lap, and has become really protective of me and my space since I became pregnant.

I say all this so as not to make him seem like a total freak, but... he's taken to sleeping in our pecan tree. He gets about nine or ten feet up in it, too, and comes bounding down like a cat each morning, yawning and stretching. :hunh I only know this because I went out early yesterday morning and could not find him (insert panic here) and he just hopped down without a care in the world. Did it again this morning, and yesterday afternoon was napping in the peach tree. These trees are not at a slant, he is literally bounding up them, catching footholds and hauling himself up until he gets to his limb of choice.

Just had to share my doggy's freaky little antics with you all as I try to process them.

Okay, now THAT's funny!

I always had weird dogs, too, until I got my sweetie beagle/spaniel mix. But NONE of them has ever climbed a tree! Cats of the neighborhood, look out!!!

Just curious but was granddaddy by any chance a Timber/Shepherd rather than a true German Shepherd? Because some wolves can climb trees. Still that would be a bit out of the ordinary, you think to look "up" for a missing cat...a missing dog, not so much.

Well, come to think of it, grey foxes (I think it's the grey variety) climb trees, in fact quite frequently. And I didn't know that about timber wolves. So maybe it's not unheard of in the canine ... genus? family? :O

As an aside, I once knew a German Shepherd named Timber. I wonder if he was named for his tree climbing exploits?

Oh, how cute!!! :haha
That is wonderful that he is sleeping in a tree.
You need to get a picture of him for us to see...at least a picture of him!!
BTW, if he is starting to get possessive of you, you may want to talk to Amber and some of the other
mamas here who are savy about animals about making sure his possessiveness doesn't turn into
aggressiveness when DH wants to cuddle, etc. I know our dog & cat get possessive of us when DH or I are sick,
so this doesn't surprise me that Bowie is possessive of your in your pregnancy (maybe he relates to you as the
senior/alpha dog and part of his job description is to protect you...???)
But I would certain get some pointers about how to keep him from his "cute" possessiveness from turning into not-so-cute aggressiveness.

He is a funny one for sure. :P~
And no need to fret, he isn't aggressive at all... he just gets annoyed at his goofy brothers if they get too boisterous around me. If Coal or Buddy ( a lab and lab mix foster pup) forget themselves and try to jump on me, he shoulder-bumps them so they sprawl in the grass and woofs quietly at them in reproach. He adores kids, so perhaps he's worried they'll hurt the human puppy by accident? LOL, Dh can chase me around the yard with a bucket of water while I shriek and beg for mercy and Bowie is running beside him grinning.

I need to take a few new pictures of him, since he hit this growth spurt he looks so different. He has overnight gone from lanky adolescent to big stout dog. I don't know much about his grandfather other than he was a GSD and we met him briefly when we picked the boys out, and his grandmother a lab. His father was this big fancy pitt imported from Germany or somesuch that did some insane doggy olympics to get at the family pet in heat in the backyard. Perhaps it's his father that sparked this in him? Eh, I don't know, but his brother Archer shows no such inclination, thank goodness.

Oh, and he does use his ability to terrorize squirrels, lol. Poor squirrels!

:haha Crazy dog. I can't say that I've ever met a GSD, Lab, Pitt cross...that is quite the mix.

I would love to see someone try to sneak into your yard and have a big dog come bounding down out of the tree in front of them :giggle

Now *that's* a guard dog!
You'll have to put up a "beware of dog" sign and have an arrow pointing upward.

Apparently rain makes it hard to get a grip. :P~

Note the confused yellow dog milling beneath; that would be his littermate, Archer, who thinks Bowie has lost his ever-lovin' mind.

And see this face? Yep, that's the face that suckered me in. Well, only it was at eye level with me staring plaintively into my face while he quietly wagged his tail with his fat baby butt in my lap. I was so wary about a half pitt anything, and only went to see the litter to humor DH, but this dog... he is mine.
