View Full Version : Does bark prohibit perennials from coming up?

We bought a house last fall and perennials are now springing up in the flower beds....along with lots of weeds. I want to lay bark down to make it look nicer and stop the weeds, but I'm not sure if more perennials will want to pop up as the summer progresses. It's hard to know what's under the dirt. If I did lay down bark, would that stop later blooming flowers from popping up?

:think I've used it as mulch and it hasn't prevented them. We have the "shredded" kind vs. the lump kind, if that makes sense. You can always push the bark around a little if you see a struggling plant to let it through.

If you keep it to a thin layer, should be fine. They come right up through a layer of undisturbed fallen leaves.

I just used peat moss and bark mulch in our new garden last month and all the perennials from the old people are coming through, and no weeds so far :smile
