I'll have to get my total from the other thread, but this morning I put in the trash:

2 pool noodles that P&E have destroyed
1 book the cats destroyed
1 broken stand fan
1 broken stand lamp
1 ficus tree that is in pieces
1 broken strand of Christmas lights
2 expired car seats

I kind of hate to see those things in the trash, they seem so "useful", you know? But they are broken or expired, they are just taking up space & they aren't worth donating. :nails I think I need some people to pat me on the head & say "there there". :shifty :lol

I have to go find my last total and update, but I was going through old quotes I've saved on my computer as I purge old computer files (does that count??), and thought I'd share one that I found meaningful for us as we declutter!

Okay, my last total was 1056. I've been keeping track on my white board and have decluttered 798 items in the last two months, so my new total is: 1854!

:cheer That's awesome! I'm amazed at how much you've decluttered while pregnant - you must have gotten over the low-energy slump pretty quickly! :highfive

Old total: 262 + 1 lonely sock, 1 zippered storage bag, 1 fabric thing I made but don't need anymore, and two other things that I can't remember what they were now, so NEW TOTAL: 267

Let me babble about the "fabric thing"... I bought many, many yards of fabric - like 20 yards - about 5 years ago when we lived in our first apartment. We had one wall that was entirely made of windows & so I made curtains/valances to cover these so I could take down the mini-blinds. Well, I overestimated the amount of fabric I needed & I had about 4 yards of extra fabric. Since then I've sewn that fabric into a "skirt" to hide stuff under our drafting table, a cover for my sewing chest so Lilia wouldn't color on it, a curtain for a cubby in our living room, and probably some other things I'm forgetting right now. The point being, I've had this fabric forever - the curtains I made are still hanging in our living room & upstairs hallway right now actually - and I've been "afraid" to throw any of it away b/c it was pricey when I bought it and it's standing up to wear very well. So, after much emotional delay, I threw away the sewing chest cover that I no longer need. Normally I would have folded it up, put it inside the chest & waited for a need to repurpose it. But it's okay to throw it away b/c I still have one small "pile" of the unsewn fabric in there :blush I don't know how I can ever throw that away. Fabric is very hard for me to let go of, simply b/c it's so useful and I'm talented enough to make it into cute & useful things. Anyway, thanks for reading this far, I hope to overcome my irrational behavior soon :yes2 I would love to make new curtains :giggle

Well, I had a few energy bursts, but have to admit that a LOT of it came from going through papers and the kids' crafts and craft kits that I've had sitting around until/in case we wanted to use them. It took a lot to let it all go. I cleaned off my bulletin board which was about 3 layers thick and went through the playroom closet and ditched a bunch of toys! All said, 2, maybe 3 sessions. I'm so embarrassed :O that I had so much junk!

:hugheart My mom is a quilter and has SO much fabric I wonder if she'll EVER use it (think wall to wall cabinets, floor to ceiling, filled WITH more fabric stacked on top PLUS extra containers and bins filled), but cannot let it go! Seriously, I somewhat understand just living through her. It's a hard thing.

TELL ME IT'S OKAY TO SELL THIS

My mom bought me a big crock pot - the kind with a regular ceramic oval-shaped bowl & then two metal bowls that fit inside that so you can cook two things at once - but this was three (or four?) years ago & I have never used it - not one time. I also just bought a very fancy rice cooker that is also a steamer & slow cooker, so I could still make more than enough of whatever to feed my family.

But please, I really need you all to tell me it's okay to sell this crock pot. It feels like a sin, it's against all things frugal! But, we don't like crock pot food. Really, it's not our style & I don't see that opinion changing anytime soon. So anyway :blush just tell me to do it :shifty

okay, I have another one-- please tell me it is okay to donate the two boxes of my mom's ugly china from when she married my dad. I have lugged those two boxes around for years through so many moves. I don't like it, I won't ever use it. I don't even use my own china which I *like*. Please tell me I can donate it w/o guilt.

KatieMae
05-14-2008, 08:48 AM
:giggle I would feel less guilt if I sold it & got some money for it ;)

I have a similar problem though - I have a set of gold (plated) silverware that was originally bought for my older sister. She died when she was 19 (I was 11) and so it was decided that *I* should have that set instead. Well I don't like it - my Waterford dining services are in platinum, not gold. But if I get rid of the silverware, what will my mom think? My grandmother bought the things one piece at a time from the Betty Crocker catalog, back in the day. I think I really need to ask my mom about this since these things are probably more important to her than to me. Maybe she would take them back?! :giggle

So what's the situation with the china - is your mom going to question you about "where are my dishes" next Thanksgiving? Though, she gave them to YOU, so it's up to YOU what to do with them :think (NO, I can't even take my own advice!)

klpmommy
05-14-2008, 09:38 AM
I'd rather get the hassle-free tax receipt.

My mom has never asked (but likely will once gone, you know?), she is never here to eat off fancy plates, dh & I never use our fancy plates, either. Even at Thanksgiving it was just the five of us & we just used regular dishes.

Okay, so, I emailed my mom about that flatware set. She says, "Please keep it til I get there again and I will take it then. It was supposed to be yours from Grandma [her mom, now deceased] but if you don't want it I will keep it for [my brother's daughter, the oldest great-grandchild in the family]"

:/ Hmmm, I really hate how that sounds. Do you think my 13 year old niece will want this stuff? She didn't know my grandmother very well at all since they lived far apart & she passed away when my niece was 9. I can't really say anything about it to my mom, though, can I? I feel like I'm betraying my oath (see above) by being an accessory to such a crime. :scratch Do I just let it go & move on with my life. It seems like a stupid thing to get in a tiff about with my mom.

klpmommy
05-15-2008, 02:13 PM

:yes I would let her deal with it how she wants. She obviously feels strongly about it. FWIW, my mom is the *same* way about the weirdest thing. She had a country-style wooden multi-tier shelf thing hidden in a room at her house that we found when we attempted to help her clean last year. Well, the thing is NOT her style and has NEVER been hung up in her house, but "I paid good money for that and I'd hate to see it go for $3 at a garage sale." :rolleyes2 So what did I do? I took it. Just to get it out of her house. Now it's sitting in mine :giggle along with an ice cream maker I will NEVER use! At least I can get rid of them for her. She may ask, but I'll just :shrug.

Is it horrible that I'm dreading the day we have to go through things at her house when she "passes" her stuff out? :O

1788 last total + 20 trash from the garage + 8 broken down old moving boxes + 2 things to Craigslist

1818!

WTG WiMama05 for your total!!

FWIW, I would have ditched the china, too. If your mom really cared, she'd still have it. At least, that's my opinion. As for the flatware, I'd give it up, too, and let your mom have whatever feelings she wants. Maybe if she pushes you on it, tell her you understand the sentiment of it, but for your life, it's cluttering things up and not practical for you to keep having around. You'd much rather that someone get use/enjoyment out of it than to have it sit nearly forgotten in your house.

On one of the Messies discussions, I talked about how I was blown away in Sandra Felton's book when she wrote that "normal" people don't keep oodles of reference materials like magazine articles or notes about things they've read, especially now that info is so accessible online.

Well... :sigh I'm very guilty of this habit & I've made a first step in ridding myself of it...

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j298/katiemae1229/DCingthepaper.jpg

:phew That was all from one very full 2" binder on my bookshelf. I kept several things that I want to read over & then toss, or just be sure that I don't want it anymore. A few things will be put into my household binder - but ONLY if I'm really going to reference it regularly. :think I want to be ruthless, but not hasty, if that's possible :giggle

SO! Old total of 276 + I'm going to guess at 150 different articles (multi-page in most case, so I'm being conservative here) =

new total: 1244

I am not sure if this was manipulative or not :shifty dh is a major packrat (I think I may have mentioned that once or twice before) & when straightening up an area today I found a broken volleyball. I knew that it was probably "special" and that he would want to keep it, but I also remembered a broken football that P has been insisting is "special" and he didn't want to throw it away just b/c it was broken. So when dh came home at lunch I showed him the v-ball while P was there & he agreed to throw it away & then P threw his broken football away. I think had P not been right there dh would have wanted to keep it. So was that horrible of me???

Old total: 426

I've been on a cleaning rampage for the last two days - getting thru the kids room, my linen closet & the guest room, which had a closet that was effectively our catch-all hiding spot, so...

14pcs of trash - the missing pieces to things I tossed before and a couple of broken things that I finally admitted that I will never fix!
56pcs into the yard sale pile :woohoo Including some big things that are still in the guest room, but will be up for sale like a glider chair & ottoman & a tv stand, also included: a gazillion stuffed animals, some baby things I don't like anymore, a pretty underbed storage box (yes, it was under our guest bed - empty! :haha :crazy), an Anne of Green Gables porcelain doll, a toilet seat we had from our apartment days, and lots of sheets & towels that I decided I don't really need

I also repurposed 10 things - moving from a closet into a useful place in a different room :rockon It's like Freecycling to myself, but I'm not gonna count that in my total, so...

The numbers represent items that have been decluttered- you can count each item as one or groups as one. So the 32 coffee cups that I decluttered (I don't count them until they leave my house, they are sitting in the dining room right now)- I can either count them as 32 separate items or I can count them as 1 box of stuff.

Hey, can I join in? Are there any rules? :)

Welcome to the club :) There are no rules, just choose a number of items you want to declutter this year & go for it! The original challenge was 2008 things in 2008, but if you don't have that much stuff or don't think you have enough time (now that the year is half-gone already!), choose something lower. I'm aiming for 1000 things but if you go back to the 1st post on this thread, we already have THREE mamas who've made it to 2008! And TrimMama & klpmommy are getting close too, so it's not too late to go for the big goal :tu

The funny thing- dh came home yesterday, saw one of the shoe boxes in the trash & nearly had a fit then & there b/c I threw away HIS SHOE BOX. He proceeded to take the shoe box out of the trash, open it to inspect it & finally agreed that I could indeed throw it away. :rolleyes :lol

Thanks ladies I feel a bit better :giglgle - what's really bad is that I can't find the BOX of school supplies that should be in our storage somewhere :doh I have to clean out my school area to find the big HUGE box of notebooks, index cards, etc.

I was about to type something like "I vow not to overbuy shool suplies this year" but really don't want to break a vow :shifty cuz I can't ever help myself - I go to the clearance and buy tons of 5 or 10 cent notebooks, 10 cent index cards, etc .99 markers. It did come in handy when my sister started HSing mid year. I gave her a bunch of stuff :P~ Ooh. . I am going to call and see if she needs anything else.

Ah yes Kimberly, the file folders :giggle I need pencils but I bet it would be more to mail pencils than buy them if I offered to take them off your hands :laughtears . Those things dissapear around here like mad - we go through hundreds of pencils a year I think :doh I think they are with the socks that go missing - maybe the dog eats them :think

Just you two wait until your kids are older - whether they HS or PS you may have school supply issues like me :giggle

I've been on another decluttering kick this week too! :rockon Things look ok on the outside but that's just because our house is bigger than before- there's so much junk and stuff that we don't need and it just makes a bigger mess to clean. SO I got rid of a big broken cooler and vacuum that were taking up lots of space in the garage- goodwill wouldn't take them so I gave them away on craigslist :rockon. Today I completely cleaned out my bathroom and threw away an entire garbage bag full of stuff from the drawers and expired medication :hunh, oh and a grocery sack full of stuff for goodwill :rockon. I didn't count up the items (how do you guys remember to do that everytime?! I always either forget or don't want to take the extra time to count :shifty) but I'm guessing it was around 50 items just today from my bathroom. I've been working more on the garage with DH, too, and it's REALLY becoming a great workable space! :woohoo We put up pegboard the other night and I've been slowly getting all the extra garbage or stuff we don't need OUT. No on to do another toy purge..... :smile.

Broken crayon box (the packaging, that is)...my mom brought it over brand new today despite repeated warning to not bring one more item into this house until we get organized!!!! So, of course the kids dumped the crayons on the floor and crushed the box underfoot. After putting the crayons back in a zillion times only to fall out the bottom, it is gone. And the crayons are put up in a plastic pencil case. Tomorrow, I am going to remove some more stuffed animals and misc. box of junky toys to make room for shelves/bins/a desk, something! Really, I am going to let them have the crayons back along with the dozens and dozens we already own, but first, we are getting dd and ds more properly set up with a place to store them...and not just handing them a box of crayons to run amok when they're hyper. :no2

Another box full of winter clothes...did not count, but added several to the too small pile in the process, and the will-still-fit-this-winter ones can go into storage tomorrow.

Great job, Jen!

I'd like to take this opportunity to ask all those who've made it past the 2008 mark to consider writing just a little bit of inspiration for the rest of us - Pretty please :pray4 :smile How has this tremendous amount of effort made a difference in your home, from a physical/visual point of view, as well as any changes that have happened in your families - do you see the children taking more pride in cleaning up their things? have they become good at donating toys they don't play with anymore? Do you & your DH feel relaxed when you walk in the house now vs. the days of chaos? Things like that - I'd love to hear how this has changed your life! :ty

How has this tremendous amount of effort made a difference in your home, from a physical/visual point of view, as well as any changes that have happened in your families - do you see the children taking more pride in cleaning up their things? have they become good at donating toys they don't play with anymore? Do you & your DH feel relaxed when you walk in the house now vs. the days of chaos? Things like that - I'd love to hear how this has changed your life! thank you!

I don't' consider myself 'done' yet, as I still have some areas that need work. But, its made a big difference.

1. my kids are now great at decluttering. I can pick up a small basket of toys and say, 'donate or keep?' and Sandy will gladly take about half and say 'donate' and keep the rest. Also, I'm seeing less of an attachment to material objects for all of us, and a willingness to give things away. For example, we had friends come over this week. One needed a change of clothes, and seeing as T just got some new outfits from my mil, it was easy to say, 'keep the dress' even though it was one of my favorites... a cute Dora one. but there were plenty of other dresses she has, and there isn't a 'need' for the other Dora one. Then, I asked Sandy to pick a book for them to take home. She went through her books and picked 1-2 for each child who was here. Then she chose a few of her small toys and told them to take them, too. The parents were surprised and said they would give them back later. But, I let Sandy decide. She's learned a lot about blessing others, and I told them it was hers to give away. If she wanted to give it away, then I'd honor her choice. So, they went home with a few toys, too, for their long car ride. Sandy does this pretty often now. This, imo, is the biggest change.

2. Physically, its made a big difference in certain areas that I've 'finished' decluttering. For example, I spent a long time decluttering the girls room. Each closet (that was A MESS) before got totally revamped. I now have room for a large organizer for the new baby, and we have been able to put blankets, outfits, socks, etc. in it. It would have never fit before :no. It also leaves more room for their dress up shoes, and things like that. I'm not embarrassed if someone comes over and I need something from the closet. the other closet I organized and hung up all their dress up clothes (the big ones). Friends came over the other day, and it was easy to open my now clean closet and let them choose what they would like to wear :).

3. Its easier to keep a decluttered home clean. Now, we still have concentrated clutter, and if we don't keep up, it gets messy. This challenge is still a work in progress. But, the Tupperware drawer opens and closes easily now, for example. The shoe rack downstairs is much easier to find our shoes on. It doesn't take NEARLY as much time to pick up when we need to.

I'm thinking of what my new goal should be for the year :think. Its fun to work towards a goal, its so motivating! I think I'm going to try to double the 2008 and get to 4016. Its a huge goal, and if I don't make it, than thats ok. But its worth a shot!

no big numbers here today, but I did some MAJOR organizing! my two top shelves in my closet are organized, my entire linen closet (5 shelves) reorganized, a HUGE pile in my bedroom that has been there for two years- gone! The best part is, I've been feeling so down about how on earth we're going to fit our new baby in our room. We need room for our cosleeper. But now that my closet is getting organized, my huge pile of clutter is gone from the corner, and the rest of the room is organized, its getting so much easier. I only have one laundry hamper for our clothes now, and put the other 2 in the laundry room to be sorted down there, which frees up a lot of space. Its such a nice feeling!

for today: 1 huge box of papers (hundreds of papers) to be tossed (too heavy for me), 10 sample pouches of bleach , 1 pair of icky socks all tossed. to be donated: 1 candleholder, to be given away- 1 frame, 1 book, 6 gifts (3 I totally forgot about :doh), 5 items from silverware drawer to be given away: 26

He also cleared off a shelf of JUNK for me to use for my gardening things :tu

same thing with my mom, but I don't see her that often so it isn't too bad. But I hate that she gives JUNK to my kids & then I have to deal with it.

Mine lives less than a mile away. She's been working harder on trying to give useful things she thinks we need, but it's still excess. For example, I let dd take her bathing suit to swim lessons in a plastic bag, and that bugged mom, so she bought dd a tote bag. We HAVE tote bags...full of dd's toys and stuffed animals, all over the house. I was just in a hurry and figured the bathing suit would be wet anyhow, so what's the big deal in grabbing a plastic bag? :shrug

the picture thread of me, has me thinking I really need to seriously declutter. and decorate.

I have a question...why do you all count the items you are getting rid of? I'm sorry if I missed that reason somewhere.

and is there a thread somewhere where people are showing before's and after's? if not, I think that would be a neat thing to do. and I think it might even give me some ideas.

I live in a small house trailer with my dh and 3 boys. it's only a 2 bedroom place. we are going to have to do something...my dh wants to build a new home for us. so I always feel like we are overun with "stuff"

Originally, the challenge was Declutter 2008 in 2008, so the goal would be to declutter 2008 items from your home this year :) I'm only going for 1000 items b/c our house isn't really cluttered, but I know we have "too much" nonetheless.

It's come up now & then but on specific threads of before's & after's. Kimberly posted one when she wanted advice about her entry & she got a million "helpful" replies ;)

Been awhile since I checked in here...it's harder to declutter with DH home. Terrible. Anyway, I did shred about 200 papers and I've been able to get rid of some boxes. Next I think I'll schedule a pickup of boxes full of things downstairs. A garage sale seems silly at this point...we'd rather do other things with our time, and we don't need any $$ we'd get from it. Donating would be much better. :yes

But I found a list from Martha about why we should get rid of things and want to share the link.
http://www.marthastewart.com/article/100-reasons-to-get-rid-of-it?lnc=f3a762af4e2ee010VgnVCM1000003d370a0aRCRD&rsc=ood_mcr

that was our decision about a garage sale, too. So much easier to donate, plus we can donate throughout the year rather than holding onto a bunch of stuff until one day. We count it all on our taxes, too.

25 stuffed animals (I actually think it was more but I was just shoving stuff in bags without counting since the kids were with me on this one :giggle) We had 2 huge stuffed garbage bags full
2 terribly annoying toys I begged the kids to get rid of :O I actually bribed them. They were able to take two small toys from a handme down bag for each toy.

10 broken toys thrown away

I can't count any more toys because they were "traded" out of the hand me down bag. But I am happy to announce that we traded for smaller toys that will take up less space :grin

that *used* to be my problem but now we are so overwhelmed with JUNK that it's not an issue anymore. :hiding The toys that Savana really loves and plays with are things she's gotten new for b-days or Christmas or the quality toys I wouldn't toss anyways. :phew

Luke's b day *is* christmas so it's absolutely insane trying to fit in everything. I'm sure we'll have to declutter again after Savana's b day (october) and after Christmas :crazy

The toy thing is tough. . . .

I have 3 bins and do it as I have time (garbage, donate, store it). I rarely store things unless it's a rotation. For example, dd has a nice wood kitchen and a nice wood doll house. I rotate them into the basement so only one is out at a time - partially because of space and partially to keep it "fresh" for her :grin

Then I just count stuff that I have either thrown away or donated and put my numbers here :mrgreen

Jody,
thanks for explaining!
I naturally declutter often because clutter makes me kind of anxious :O
We just moved and did a MAJOR declutter before the move but it is funny how anxious I am getting already about Christmas. Almost want to just tell the inlaws PLEASE PLEASE limit the number of gifts to the kids. It is always a huge issue every single year at Christmas. Instead of having an uncomfortable conversations with my mil, should I just plan on an automatic declutter right after christmas??? It is so hard though because we have downsized so much that everything we have kept are actually NICE toys. but, we just don't have the room for anymore. So we will have to toss some as more come in.
What would you do?
This is the problem I have with kids' clothes as well. I dont' like to have too too many in one size. So I try to limit it and so wha twe have left are nice things. and then my mil will come for a visit and bring new shirts for the boys and such. I am not tryin gto sound ungrateful. but, it is hard for me to go to their closet and take out one nice shirt to be replaced by each new shirt, but I have to or we wouldn't be able to live nicely in our home. I wish she would just not buy for us anymore. I hate waste. I give the things away, but still. I hate the waste, somehow.
