Garnet yams--is this normal??

I bought garnet yams for the first time today. I'm peeling and cutting them and they're oozing a white milk-like liquid. Is that normal??

I know this is old.. but I just bought some recently too, and yes.. mine did the same thing.

I know they were fresh and healthy, so I assumed it was normal. ;)
