any idea what this yellow stuff is on one of my lilac bushes?

Do you have any idea what it is and if it will hurt the bush?  Some of the leaves had some brown on them, and my dd was wondering if it was related.  The leaves with the brown on them did seem to be  on the branches that had that stuff on them.  :think

I'm not sure but I think it is just a moss or lichen, which is not a big deal. You can clip a piece off and take it to your local nursery. They will let you know what it is and if it's worrisome.

I wonder if it is some kind of scale? You might google a bit on lilac scale.
