Maybe a stupid question

I have 6 huge pine trees in my backyard. We just moved here in July. Well, the previous owners did nice landscaping around them with rocks. I went to go pull weeds, and OUCH! All those pine needles. How should I weed around these?

I love pine trees - I grew up in a pine forest but they don't really grow here in the desert. :(
